Shooter Esha Singh skipped four finals to find her shot. Then she won Asian Championships Gold | Sport-others News

5 min readFeb 4, 2026 09:58 PM IST At the start of the year, Esha Singh left everyone puzzled. Across four events at the shooting nationals and domestic trials, the 21-year-old would breeze through qualifications, earn her spot in the final, and then simply not show up. For a shooter with medals from every international competition imaginable—save for the one that matters most, an Olympic podium finish—the deliberate absences seemed bizarre. What was India’s pistol prodigy doing? On Wednesday at the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range, the answer became clear. With just four days of mental preparation—visualizing her finals routine, rehearsing the pressure moments in her mind—Singh walked into the Asian Shooting Championships and delivered. The 10m air pistol gold came easily, a commanding 4.8-point margin over silver medalist Ching-yen Chen, with a score of 239.8. Not world-beating, perhaps, but convincing enough to add another continental medal to her growing collection. “She’s a seasoned athlete,” explains coach Ronak Pandit, defending the unusual strategy. “She doesn’t need training for finals right now.” The pressure cooker It’s …

2025: Her Year – Behind Suruchi Phogat’s rise as India’s next big thing, a ‘Chinese shooting style’ | Sport-others News

Around India’s shooting ranges, there’s been a growing buzz this year about a ‘Chinese style’ teenage shooter. It’s a nod not just to her performances — though they have been spectacular — but to a philosophy: fast, aggressive and unflinchingly clinical; the hallmark of China’s shooting dominance. At the center of this buzz is Suruchi Phogat, the 19-year-old whose ascent has been so rapid that it has left even seasoned observers scrambling for comparisons: a hat-trick of World Cup gold medals, a junior world record, and climbing to the top of the world rankings before ending the year at number 2. But she’s been turning heads not just because she wins — India has seen many wunderkinds, Saurabh Chaudhary and Manu Bhaker to name a couple. But it’s because of how she does it: with speed, composure, and a striking immunity to pressure. In a sport where patience is often preached as gospel, Suruchi operates on a different rhythm. A Pant in the sport of Pujaras. Many elite shooters favour a long, deliberate aim, holding …

Wrestler Virender Singh, better known as goonga pehelwan and India’s Deaflympics hero, inspired Inder Singh Phogat. So much so that when Inder’s daughter Suruchi was born a year after Virender won a gold medal at the 2005 Melbourne Deaflympics, he set his mind on making her a wrestler. The champion lived down the road. Inder and Virender’s homes were less than a kilometer apart in Sasroli village, Jhajjar. By 11, Suruchi joined a local wrestling academy, spurred on by Virender’s second medal. But tragedy struck a year later when Suruchi broke her shoulder bone. The fracture took nearly a year to heal fully. And wrestling’s loss became shooting’s gain. At the MPSC Shooting range on Wednesday at the National Games, 18-year-old Suruchi lived up to her rating as one to watch out for by winning the 10m air pistol gold medal. It was a Haryana 1-2 on the podium with 2022 Asian Games gold medalist Palak Gulia winning the silver – Suruchi with a final score of 245.7 and Palak 243.6. Punjab’s Simranpreet Kaur Brar …
