Tripura govt bars GBP-AGMC doctors from private practice

The Tripura government has decided to bar doctors at the state-run GBP-AGMC hospital from private practice to improve services at the health facility, a minister said. A 20 per cent hike on basic salary will be given as a non-practice allowance to faculty members and medical officers of GB Pant Hospital and Agartala Government Medical College, state Minister Sushanta Chowdhury said on Tuesday. He said the council of ministers, in its last meeting held on Monday, passed a proposal to bar the faculty members and medical officers of GBP Pant Hospital & AGMC from private practice. “In exchange, they will get a 20 per cent hike in basic salary as a non-practice allowance. A notification will be issued soon in this regard,” he said. Amid the week-long curbs imposed on the sale of petrol and diesel in Tripura due to the disruption of rail traffic triggered by landslides, protests and vandalisms are being reported as fuel stocks ran dry and people waiting in long queues were asked to come back the next day. A team of Tripura Police had to disperse aggrieved motorists from a petrol pump at Ganaraj Chowmuhani area in Agartala city late on Thursday after the pump authorities shut down keeping many in the queue who had been waiting for hours as late as 11 pm. An official from East Agartala police station, who came to the spot after the disturbance broke out, told reporters that the police were instructed to maintain law and order and avert untoward incidents triggered by the fuel crisis. “There is a (fuel) crisis across the state.
