A man, who cleared the sub-inspector examination, and his father died early Thursday in a village in this district after accidentally touching a broken live power line in the field where they had gone to defecate, police said.
The incident took place in Sahpurwa village under Bansdih Road police station area following which villagers staged a road blockade.
According to the police, Rajesh Yadav (27) and his father Janardan Yadav (58) had gone to the field around 6 am for their morning routine when Rajesh came in contact with the power line that had snapped and fallen there the previous night.
As Janardan rushed to save his son, he too came in contact with the live wire and both died on the spot, officials said.
Rajesh had successfully cleared the recruitment examination for the post of sub-inspector in the police department.
Following the incident, villagers blocked the Ballia-Bansdih highway, disrupting traffic. The blockade was later lifted after the Bansdih sub-divisional magistrate pacified the protesters, Circle Officer (Bansdih) Jaishankar Mishra said.
Mishra said a case has been registered against Electricity Department Junior Engineer Anand Jaiswal and employee Mukul Upadhyay under Section 106 (causing death by negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Local BJP MLA Ketki Singh visited the spot and offered condolences to the bereaved family. She also informed Energy Minister A K Sharma and senior officials about the incident.
District Magistrate Mangala Prasad Singh announced financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the deceased and said action would be taken against the Electricity Department employees responsible for the incident.
