Switzerland to collaborate with J&K on sustainable tourism, vocational training

We proved that an inclusive movie screening is possible. With CBFC’s new rules, it can be made sustainable

We proved that an inclusive movie screening is possible. With CBFC’s new rules, it can be made sustainable

In December 2022, in a luxury theatre in Tirunelveli — a town not typically associated with pioneering anything in cinema — a girl named Angel watched her first film. She was a student at the School for the Blind in Palayamkottai. She was 15 and had never been inside a movie theatre. The film was Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan. A prestige epic, three hours of Chola-era intrigue, battle sequences, A R Rahman’s orchestral swells. Not, on the face of it, the most obvious choice for a screening aimed at visually impaired and hearing-impaired students. But that was rather the point. We were not looking for a “suitable” film. We were looking for the film everyone else was talking about. Inclusion, if it means anything at all, means you get to argue about whether Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was miscast. It does not mean you get a special screening of an educational documentary about road safety. It took a week to pull it off. A week of working with theatre technicians to create and synchronise an audio …

He said the vision for ‘Susthira Mysuru’ (Sustainable Mysuru) should be based on a scientific and predictable development model that is free from political influence and could serve as an example of sustainable urban development for other cities in the country. Speakers at the symposium noted that while development is often perceived as invisible to citizens, modern technology can accurately track and measure it. “The eye in the sky — satellites — see it all,” …

‘Sustainable urbanisation and better municipal governance needed to fuel growth in India’

‘Sustainable urbanisation and better municipal governance needed to fuel growth in India’

SATHYAMOORTHY Municipal governance in India has collapsed, and better municipal governance is a key reform that needs to happen in India, said Amitabh Kant, former G20 Sherpa and CEO, NITI Aayog. Speaking on the second day of the Nilgiris Economic Dialogue, Mr. Kant, who was taking questions from the attendees at the event, said that “Sustainable urbanisation was a key tool for driving development in the country. We have failed miserably as a country in shaping the right institutions and governance. We have spoiled every single city, all of which have become unlivable, are dens of corruption and have become huge areas of dirt, garbage and filth, including the capital of India,” he said. Mr. Kant said that while there were some “islands of excellence” such as Indore and Surat, that communities in cities need to step up and drive such transformations across the country. “Municipal governance has collapsed, and municipal governance is the key to better livelihoods and …

So not only rockets, not only spacecraft, but parts of space experiments, satellites, new technologies, 3D Printing, wherever anybody wants to work. It’s not unusual nowadays that we have people who…go to one company for a couple years and go to another company and then go to another company,” Williams said at the American Center. ‘We’ve done it for centuries’: How you can make your wedding truly sustainable, just like Dia Mirza and Vaibhav Rekhi | Life-style News

Weddings are often extravagant affairs, but actor Dia Mirza and her husband, Vaibhav Rekhi, took a different route when they tied the knot in 2021. Their celebration was designed to be eco-friendly, focusing on sustainability at every step — from décor to fashion to waste management.  Appearing on the Fashionably Pernia podcast, Dia was quick to respond when the host noted that many couples followed suit after her wedding. She emphasised, “We’ve done it for centuries,” prompting the fashion designer to remark that people tend to forget this. Dia then reflected on how society has been drawn into a cycle of excessive consumption, saying, “We forgot that because we got sucked into mindless consumption, consumerism, capitalist world, making you believe that the only way you can validate your existence is if you are wasteful.” Determined to break that pattern, the couple made thoughtful choices for their wedding. Instead of extravagant gifts, they opted for hand-crafted woven baskets from Meghalaya and gifted plants to their guests. Their floral arrangements featured hyper-local flowers, reducing the carbon footprint …
