Tariff tracker, April 23: Relief rally in the markets as Bessent says tariffs against China not sustainable | Explained News

The biggest news coming out of Washington on Tuesday was the report of the US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent telling investors that “no one thinks the current status quo” of prohibitively high tariffs between China and the US “is sustainable”. Further, as CNBC reported, Bessent reportedly assured investors that “there will be a de-escalation” in the trade war between the two largest economies of the world in the “very near future”. The news reports lifted investor sentiment as US stock markets shot up — temporarily at least. By the time trading stopped benchmark indices in the US had regained most of the ground they lost on Monday. The government bond yields also fell a bit and most significantly, the weakness in the US dollar also abated. Even so, in the background more tariff action continued. Bloomberg reported that the US will impose upto a whopping 3,521% tariffs on solar imports from Asian countries such as Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia. On the other hand, South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that “China has released an action …

A Chennai Farm that champions Local, Sustainable and Fresh Produce

A Chennai Farm that champions Local, Sustainable and Fresh Produce

The focus is on being local and seasonal. The best example of this is their small plates called Innikku meaning today in Tamil, which features an ingredient that’s only available for a short duration, sometimes just a handful of days. From making their ketchup to sausages almost everything on a plate served in their restaurant is made by hand and with immense attention to detail. If the ingredient is not grown or produced on the farm, it’s carefully sourced — the seafood that comes from local fishermen, and the silken tofu that’s made by a Chennai-based Japanese family. Over years of travel, the couple have met and befriended like-minded producers, many of whom have now become friends and suppliers. From Leh, Ladakh they get sun-dried tomatoes, Chamomile tea and dried apricots. Tart sea buckthorn berries come from the remote Spiti Valley as does apricot oil, peppermint and barley. A self-professed chilli fiend, Shalini personally oversees the making of a 21-day fermented bhut jolokia hot sauce. Vegetables and herbs that don’t grow in the coastal belt …

Google unveils ‘Ananta,’ its largest campus in India; 5,000 seats, sustainable design, and an AI-first approach | Technology News

On Wednesday, Google unveiled its largest campus in India—Ananta, meaning “infinite” or “limitless” in Sanskrit—one of Google’s largest campuses in the world. Located in Mahadevapura, Bengaluru, Ananta has a seating capacity of over 5,000, and the campus has been designed with accessibility in mind, and the materials used for its construction are sourced almost entirely locally. “Ananta will be known not just for the innovations that emerge from within its walls—powered by India but for the world—but also for its lasting impact. Six years ago, we made a pivotal shift, embracing an AI-first approach. We recognised India’s potential not only as a deep talent pool but also as a place where AI can transform lives at scale. This new campus marks a milestone in the ongoing seismic shift in technology. It is a testament to our ambition to innovate and drive the next transformative leap in AI,” said Preeti Lobana, vice president and country manager at Google India. Kumbh Is A Blueprint For Sustainable Civilization, Says Gautam Adani

Ahmedabad: The Kumbh isn’t just a religious gathering but a blueprint for sustainable civilization, a testament to cultural authenticity and a living example of tradition adapting to modernity, Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani has said and noted that India’s strength, as it marches to becoming a global superpower, lies not just “in what we build but in what we preserve”. Gautam Adani, in an article on LinkedIn, also spoke about the unique insights from Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj in terms of inclusive growth, spiritual technology, and cultural confidence. Gautam Adani, who visited the Maha Kumbh Mela earlier this month, said it reflects the essence of India’s soft power and is probably the world’s largest management case study. He said India’s true strength lies in its soul, “where growth is not just economic power” but a confluence of human consciousness and service. “This is the lesson Kumbh teaches us – that true legacy is not in structures built, but in the consciousness, we build – and that thrives for centuries. Therefore, the next time you hear …

Manchester United deems its financial losses ‘not sustainable’ and defends midseason ticket price hikes | Football News

Manchester United has told fans it cannot sustain its current financial losses and risks breaching Premier League rules after facing a backlash over rising ticket prices. The record 20-time English champion, which is co-owned by the American Glazer family and British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe, said it had lost more than 300 million pounds ($371 million) over the past three years. “This is not sustainable and if we do not act now we are in danger of failing to comply with PSR/FFP (financial) requirements in future years and significantly impacting our ability to compete on the pitch,” United wrote in a letter to fan group The 1958 and seen by The Associated Press. Supporters have hit out after United raised its lowest-priced tickets to 66 pounds ($81) partway through the season. Previously, the lowest priced ticket was 40 pounds ($49). “We will get back to a cash positive position as soon as possible and we will have to make some difficult choices to get there,” United wrote. It said it did “not expect fans to make …

Crystal-Based Cooling Technology Could Offer Sustainable Solution for Fridges and Air Conditioners

Crystal-Based Cooling Technology Could Offer Sustainable Solution for Fridges and Air Conditioners

A novel crystal-based technology has been identified as a potential solution for sustainable cooling systems. Current refrigeration and air conditioning devices rely on liquid-based systems to absorb heat through evaporation and condensation. While effective, these fluids contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions when leaked, intensifying global warming. Efforts to counteract this environmental impact have led to the development of an alternative cooling mechanism based on plastic crystals, which possess a unique molecular structure capable of transforming under pressure. How the Technology Works According to researchers at Deakin University, plastic crystals exhibit a transformative ability when subjected to extreme pressure. Their molecular orientation shifts from a disordered state to a structured grid, absorbing heat as the pressure is released. This heat absorption process facilitates cooling, providing a climate-friendly alternative to traditional refrigerants. Unlike earlier materials, which required high ambient temperatures for similar transitions, the newly developed crystals operate effectively between -37 degree Celsius and 10 degree Celsius. This range aligns with typical household refrigeration and freezing needs, presenting a significant step forward in sustainable cooling technologies. …
