Codeine syrup trafficking network: STF nabs absconding ex-UP constable

The Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) on Tuesday arrested dismissed Uttar Pradesh police constable Alok Pratap Singh, 46, a suspected key facilitator in the multi-crore Codeine syrup trafficking network spread across multiple states and nations, confirmed senior police officials in a press note shared by the STF on Tuesday. Alok Pratap Singh had been absconding for a long time. Investigators say after several arrests in the Codeine diversion case, Alok Pratap Singh was actively exploring options to flee India. (For Representation) They said the probe so far uncovered evidence suggesting Singh acted as an operator, protector, and facilitator of the illegal syndicate that supplied Codeine-based cough syrup across states and potentially to neighbouring countries. A senior STF official said Singh had reportedly applied for surrender before a Lucknow court, but STF teams backed by technical surveillance and precise intelligence intercepted him before he could reach the court premises. India Bans Anti-Cold Drug For Children Below 4 After Syrup Deaths Claim

Mumbai: The drugs regulator in India has banned the use of an anti-cold drug combination in children aged below four and ordered that drugs should be labelled accordingly, in the wake of the deaths of at least 141 children globally linked to cough syrups. The regulator said concerns raised about promotion of an unapproved anti-cold drug formulation in infants prompted a discussion and a resulting recommendation to not use the combination for that age group. The order comes after a spate of child deaths since 2019 that authorities linked to toxic cough syrups made in the country, including at least 141 deaths in Gambia, Uzbekistan and Cameroon since the middle of last year. Within India, authorities said at least 12 children died and four others were left with severe disabilities in 2019 after consuming domestically-made cough syrups. India is often dubbed the “world’s pharmacy” due to its supply of life-saving drugs at low prices. Uzbekistan Cough Syrup Deaths: India has launched a probe into the claims. New Delhi: Uzbekistan has claimed that at least 18 children in the country have died after allegedly taking an India-manufactured cough syrup. The health ministry of Uzbekistan, in a statement, said that the children who died had consumed cough syrup Doc-1 Max – manufactured by Noida-based Marion Biotech. India has launched a probe into the matter and the manufacturing of the cough syrup has been halted at the Noida unit of the pharmaceutical company until the samples are tested. According to the Uzbekistan’s health ministry, the laboratory tests of a batch of syrups found “the presence of ethylene glycol”, a toxic substance.  It also said the syrup was given to children at home without a doctor’s prescription, either by their parents or on the advice of pharmacists, with doses that exceeded the standard dose for children. It was found that the children, before being hospitalised, took this syrup at home for 2-7 days, in doses of 2.5 to 5 ml three to four times a day, which exceeds the …
