Image used for representation | Photo Credit: The Hindu Uttar Pradesh Police on Friday (January 23, 2026) initiated attachment proceedings against movable and immovable assets worth around ₹28.50 crore belonging to Bhola Prasad, the prime accused in a codeine-based cough syrup smuggling case, following court orders, officials said. The attachment was carried out at three different locations in Varanasi under the supervision of Sonbhadra City Circle Officer Randhir Kumar Mishra, police said. Prasad, a resident of Varanasi Commissionerate area, is currently lodged in Sonbhadra district jail. Sonbhadra Superintendent of Police (SP) Abhishek Verma said during the special investigation team’s probe into the illegal trade of cough syrup containing codeine, it was found that the main accused had been operating an organised syndicate and amassed assets worth about ₹28.50 crore through the illicit business. Based on the findings, the properties were identified, and a report was submitted to the court seeking attachment under Section 107 (attachment, forfeiture, or restoration of property derived from criminal activity) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). Three men have been arrested in Bijnor district for the illegal sale and non-medical use of codeine-laced cough syrup amid an ongoing statewide crackdown on an alleged codeine syrup racket, police said on Saturday. Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Krishna Gopal Singh, said the arrests were made following a complaint filed by drug inspector Umesh Kumar Bharti on November 23 against Arun, Shivanshu and Resab, all residents of Bijnor, for the unauthorised sale and use of codeine-laced syrup. “After investigation, all three accused were arrested on Friday”, the ASP said, adding that the drive against illegal narcotics trade would continue. Another case related to the illegal sale of codeine-laced syrup is under investigation, and arrests will be made soon, the officer said. The action follows a wider probe into an alleged illegal network involved in the storage and distribution of highly-regulated codeine-laced cough syrups across Uttar Pradesh. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday claimed that some of those arrested for allegedly supplying illegal codeine-based cough syrup have links to the Samajwadi Party, reported news agency PTI.  “Everyone knows that every ‘mafia’ group has ties with the Samajwadi Party,” Adityanath told reporters ahead of the Winter Session of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday conducted raids across multiple states as part of a money-laundering investigation into an alleged illegal codeine-based cough syrup (CBCS) trafficking racket in Uttar Pradesh, officials said, reported news agency PTI.  More than 25 locations were searched in Lucknow, Varanasi, Jaunpur and Saharanpur, as well as in Ranchi and Ahmedabad, they added.  According to the PTI, the raids targeted premises linked to the “absconding” prime accused, Shubham Jaiswal, his Chartered Accountant Vishnu Aggarwal, and alleged associates, including dismissed UP Police Constables Alok Singh, Amit Singh, and Vishal Singh. Several godowns, offices and shops belonging to manufacturers, distributors and stockists connected to CBCS trading were also covered during the operation. The federal probe agency recently registered a criminal case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), taking cognisance of about 30 UP Police FIRs related to the misuse, illegal manufacturing, trade and transport of CBCS, including smuggling across the Bangladesh border, PTI reported. The alleged kingpin of cough-syrup racket, Bhola Prasad Jaiswal, who was arrested from Kolkata airport, has been brought back here on a transit remand on Wednesday, a senior official said. Superintendent of Police (SP) Abhishek Verma presented the accused before the media and said, “Jaiswal, father of the drug mafia, was detained at Kolkata airport on Sunday, while he was reportedly attempting to flee abroad.” Police had earlier seized 1,19,675 bottles of banned cough syrup from two container trucks on October 18, valued at around Rs 3.5 crore, the SP said. In related actions, 13,400 bottles were recovered in Jharkhand, and during a joint operation with Ghaziabad police on the night of November 3, contraband syrup worth Rs 3.4 crore and Rs 20 lakh in cash were also seized. Two flats in Chennai belonging to the promoter of Sresan Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Coldrif cough syrup linked to the death of at least 20 children in Madhya Pradesh, have been attached under the anti-money laundering law, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) said on Wednesday (December 3, 2025). The assets, located at Kodambakkam in Tamil Nadu’s capital city, are owned by G. Ranganathan and his family members, it said in a statement. The value of the flats is ₹2.04 crore, the statement said. Mr. Ranganathan was arrested by Madhya Pradesh Police in October. The agency alleged Sresan Pharma indulged in “rampant unfair trade practices to suppress its manufacturing costs and increase profits which are nothing but proceeds of crime (under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act)”. A probe found that the manufacturer used industry-grade raw materials in the manufacturing of medicines instead of pharma-grade raw materials “without” proper quality checks. “Such materials were being purchased in cash without invoices to avoid creation of records,” the ED said.
