Tasmac shuts 150 outlets in three days; salesmen face challenges from customers

More than 150 liquor outlets located in close proximity to educational institutions and places of worship have been shut across Tamil Nadu following directives issued by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. Sources said that around 50 shops were shut on May 12, followed by another 50 outlets on May 13 and an additional 50 on May 14. Employees associated with the process said that shop closure is not a simple exercise of shutting operations and vacating the premises. They pointed out that it involves a detailed procedure, including shifting existing stock to the godown and completing the necessary financial and administrative formalities, including submission of accounts. The Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation Limited, known as Tasmac, has compiled and segregated details of shops to be closed under multiple categories including district, shop number and the administrative area under which the outlet falls — corporation, municipality, town panchayat or village panchayat. Joseph Vijay on Tuesday (May 12, 2026) ordered the closure of 717 Tasmac shops functioning within 500 metres of educational institutions and places of worship across the State. Among all districts, Thoothukudi is set to witness the highest number of shop closures. The pearl city, which falls under Madurai region, will wind up 63 shops. The Madurai belt alone will account for the closure of 281 Tasmac outlets under the State-wide crackdown. Around 37 will close down in Virudhunagar and 33 in Tirunelveli. Madurai South will see 32 closures, while Ramanathapuram will shut 29 shops and Dindigul, 26. Sivaganga and Kanniyakumari will each witness 18 closures, while Madurai North and Theni will see 13 and 12 shops shut, respectively. Two persons were murdered in two Tasmac outlets near Ambur and Tirupattur town on Saturday over previous enmity. Police said the deceased were identified as S. Appunu (40), a native of Saminathapuram village near Ambur town, and B. Silabarasan (37), a native of Tirupattur town. Initial inquiry revealed that victim Appunu and his friend K. Gokul, a resident of Madhanur near Ambur, were consuming liquor in a Tasmac outlet near Madhanur village, off Chennai – Bengaluru Highway (NH 48). They were cab drivers in the area. Police said that the duo got into a heated argument when Appunu wanted his ₹20,000 back from Gokul, who borrowed the money a few months ago to meet his domestic needs. They exchanged blows on each other. In the impact, Appunu was badly injured. Immediately, Appunu was admitted at Government Taluk Hospital in Ambur town where doctors said that he was brought dead. New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday strongly criticised the Enforcement Directorate (ED), stating that it is “crossing all limits” and violating the federal structure of governance. The remarks came while the apex court stayed the ED’s money laundering probe against Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC ), the state-run liquor retailer. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday carried out raids at various locations across Tamil Nadu in connection with reported offences related to Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation Limited (TASMAC) and association entities under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002. Investigating has begun today, early morning at 10 locations, informed the officials, reported news agency ANI. This search operation follows numerous FIRs filed under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. The allegations include TASMAC shops charging more than the actual MRP, distillery companies giving kickbacks to TASMAC officials for supply orders, and senior TASMAC officials accepting bribes from retail shops and for staff transfers. On March 6, 2025, ED conducted a search operation and seized incriminating data related to transfer posting, transport tender manipulation, bar license tenders, indent orders benefiting specific distilleries, and overpricing of Rs 10- 30 per bottle at TASMAC outlets by officials. This investigation revealed tampering in TASMAC’s transport tender process, including interchanging between application KYC details and Demand Drafts.
