HC allows engineering college to terminate service of faculty due to closure of course

A division bench comprising Justice D.K. Singh and Justice Tara Vitasta Ganju made these observations while allowing an appeal filed by Malnad College of Engineering, Hassan. However, the bench directed the college to pay ₹40 lakh each as financial assistance to the the faculty members taking note that they had worked for a long time in the college, and them losing their job before the age of superannuation due to closure of the department. The Supreme Court on Friday, while permitting the medical termination of a 30-week pregnancy of a 17-year-old girl, said that courts cannot force a woman, especially a minor, to continue a pregnancy. A bench of Justices B V Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan noted that the girl became pregnant while in a relationship with a neighbourhood boy and had approached the court seeking termination of the pregnancy. Stating that “citizenry cannot be deprived of a well-constructed highway to ensure smooth and free movement,” the Delhi High Court has permitted the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to proceed with its intent to terminate the contract of a Pune contractor working on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. The Indian Express, on December 19, 2025, had reported on how the 1,386-km Expressway project, being built at a cost of Rs 1.04 lakh crore, has been left in limbo owing to non-completion of an 87-km stretch in Gujarat by the contractor, Roadways Solutions India Infra Limited (RSIIL). RSIIL was first awarded all these three stretches in 2021. Two of these were scrapped in March 2023 due to delays, only to be re-awarded to the same company in November 2023 after it bid the lowest. At the end of almost four years now, less than 20% per cent of the 87 km has been completed. The Bombay High Court allowed a 32-year-old woman to terminate her 26-week pregnancy at a private hospital of her choice in the city due to foetal anomalies. The court allowed her plea to medically terminate the pregnancy considering her medical condition, right to reproductive freedom, bodily autonomy and right of choice. A bench of Justices Revati Mohite-Dere and Neela K Gokhale on March 28 passed an order on plea by the woman argued through advocate Meenaz Kakalia, who was unwilling to continue her pregnancy. The board opined that the foetus suffered skeletal dysplasia, which can lead to significant morbidity, need for surgical intervention and complications. Due to threats, she did not disclose the crime until her deteriorating health led her mother to seek medical help. A 13-year-old rape survivor was on Monday allowed to medically terminate her over 27-week pregnancy immediately. The Odisha High Court in its order recognised the grave risk the pregnancy posed to her life and well-being. The minor, a resident of Kandhamal district, suffers from sickle cell anaemia and epilepsy, conditions that significantly increase the dangers associated with childbirth. The victim, belonging to a Scheduled Tribe community, was repeatedly raped last year by a local youth. Biggs, who is also the Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Crime and Federal Government Surveillance, has reintroduced the bill which seeks Pakistan’s credible actions against Haqqani Network to remain a major non-NATO ally of the US. The bill says that the president first needs to be assured that Pakistan continues to conduct military operations that are contributing to significantly disrupting the safe haven and freedom of movement of the Haqqani Network before issuing a certification to Islamabad.  The certification also needs to say that Pakistan has taken steps to demonstrate its commitment to prevent the Haqqani Network from using Pakistan as a safe haven and that Islamabad actively coordinates with the Afghan government to restrict the movement of militants such as the Haqqani Network, along the Afghan-Pak border.
