Russia’s top court lifts Taliban’s designation as ‘terrorist organisation’ after two decades

Russia’s top court lifts Taliban’s designation as ‘terrorist organisation’ after two decades

The move was a diplomatic victory for the Taliban, who were put on Russia’s list of terrorist organisations in 2003, making any contact with them punishable under Russian law. Moscow: Russia’s Supreme Court on Thursday officially removed the Taliban from its list of banned terrorist organisations. The Taliban had been designated a terrorist group by Russia since 2003, and any interaction with them was considered a criminal offense under Russian law. This recent decision marks a diplomatic shift and is seen as a victory for the Taliban, who have sought international legitimacy since returning to power in Afghanistan in 2021. At the same time, Taliban delegations have attended various forums hosted by Russia as Moscow has sought to position itself as a regional power broker. The court’s ruling on a request by the Prosecutor General’s office followed last year’s adoption of a law stipulating that the official designation as a terrorist organisation could be suspended by a court.  (With AP inputs) Disclaimer: We do not own any of the content, ideas, images, or text presented …

As Tahawwur Rana Talks, Pakistan Had Better Lend An Ear

As Tahawwur Rana Talks, Pakistan Had Better Lend An Ear

One can hardly say that “the eagle has landed” in the manner of spy thrillers. Intel coding for movement to India of a despised terrorist would be more like, “the carrion crow has been shackled”. For, Tahawwur Rana was not even a terrorist who risked his life to commit violence. He stayed in the shadows, pushing and guiding others, from his comfortable home in Chicago. But make no mistake. He’s critical for a clear understanding of what happened not just before the Mumbai attacks, but after it. He was, after all, arrested only a year later, and he and David Headley began to operate together in 1997. That’s nearly 12 years of information. The Intel guys are going to have fun. Let’s take Tahawwur Rana apart – apart from the usual banalities. That he was from an elite family, and was able to study in the Pakistan army’s Hassan Abdal cadet college is clear. He also went for trips with fellow student Daud Gilani, or David Headley, to the tribal areas, where the latter at …

Yasin Malik tells Supreme Court I am political leader not terrorist 7 PMs engaged with me cbi probe hafiz saeed photo

Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front chief Yasin Malik said he was replying to the CBI’s argument that he could not be physically produced before the Jammu Court as he was a dreaded terrorist. Yasin Malik, jailed Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief, on Friday (April 4) said in the Supreme Court of India that he was a ‘political leader’ and not a ‘terrorist’ and claimed that seven Prime Ministers had engaged in a dialogue with him in the past. Appearing via video-conferencing before a bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan, Yasin Malik referred to the submission of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), that there were photos of him alongside terrorist Hafiz Saeed and it was covered by all national and regional dailies and television channels. “This statement has created a public narrative against me. The union government has not listed my organisation as a terrorist organisation under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). It is pertinent to note that post a unilateral ceasefire in 1994, I was not …

Is It Payback Time For Pakistan Army?

Is It Payback Time For Pakistan Army?

It’s ironic in the extreme. Even as the Pakistan Army marched in precision on the parade ground and showcased its might on the occasion of Pakistan Day two days ago (March 23), facts indicate that it is riven with divisions on an unprecedented scale. Apart from near-daily attacks on itself, the army has turned into a brute force, with its ‘counter-terrorism’ operations not differentiating even children or women from terrorists. That’s terrible for the people on the receiving end, but deeply corrosive also for the forces that undertake such actions. So what explains the rumours of deep resentment within the lower ranks, and, if reports are to be believed, calls for the Army Chief to resign? A Bloody War The parade itself was held with all fanfare, with a rather uncomfortable looking Prime Minister in front, while President Zardari delivered the formal address. Behind him was the Army Chief and his cohorts. The whole seating arrangement could have been reversed and nobody would have batted an eye, so obviously was the Army Chief in charge.  …
