Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that the first operational section of India’s Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project will begin services next year, reported the ANI. Speaking at the HYSEA GCCS & IT Roundtable in Hyderabad, the minister said the Surat-Bilimora stretch will be the first part of the country’s inaugural high-speed rail corridor to become operational. Vaishnaw said the remaining sections of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor will be opened gradually. According to the minister, the rollout will continue from Vapi to Surat, followed by Vapi to Ahmedabad, Ahmedabad to Thane, and finally Ahmedabad to Mumbai, the news agency reported. He said the phased opening will allow different parts of the corridor to become operational as construction progresses. Incessant heavy rainfall triggered a major landslide in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri district, burying five houses and trapping residents under the debris, officials said on Tuesday. The incident took place in the Dahivali area of Khed tehsil on Monday night after continuous rainfall battered the region. Officials said a 75-year-old woman, identified as Kalpana Shelar, was safely rescued following the landslide. Two others, identified as Shantaram Shelar and Satish Shelar, remained trapped under the debris. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), local police and other emergency agencies reached the location and launched search and rescue operations. No person was injured in the incident, they said. The compound wall collapsed onto parked vehicles near a chawl (row tenement) in the Wagle Estate area of Thane, Regional Disaster Management Cell chief Yasin Tadvi said. The disaster control room received an emergency call about the incident from a local resident at 12.34 am, the official said. A man claiming to be a “healer” and his associate have allegedly cheated a businessman from Thane in Maharashtra of ₹56.2 lakh under the pretext of providing him a herbal treatment for his ailments, police said on Sunday. Out of fear, the victim paid ₹20,000 in cash and later transferred various amounts in instalments, totalling ₹56.2 lakh, but the accused continued demanding more money. But the victim did not experience any improvement in his health after consuming the medicines. Stating the likelihood of hot and humid conditions, the weather department has forecast that temperatures are likely to hover over 36 degrees in Mumbai and past 39 degrees in Thane district. According to data, daytime temperatures soared past 34 degrees in the suburbs as well as Colaba coastal observatory on Monday. The city sought no respite during the evening as well with the minimum temperatures in Santacruz and Colaba stations oscillating between 28 and 29 degrees on Sunday night.
