Man arrested for selling gutka at Ambur railway station

A 27-year-old man was arrested by Ambur town police in Tirupattur for selling gutka in bus terminus and railway station in the area. Police said the arrested person was identified as S. Rajiv Gandhi, a resident of Mangathoppu near Ambur town. Based on orders of Superintendent of Police V. Shymala Devi, special teams were formed to prevent the sale and transport of banned tobacco and other substances in the district. Police said that they were alerted about the sale of gutka at Ambur railway station. A team patrolled the station and seized a large bag full of the banned substance from the suspect. Gandhi told police that he brought a large quantity of gutka from Chittoor to sell in at public places like bus terminus and railway stations. A case was registered and he was lodged at sub-jail in Tirupattur. Further probe is under way. Officials of the Public Works Department (PWD), which executes the multi-crore work with funds from the Election Commission of India (ECI), said that the existing dilapidated building of the Department of Agriculture has been used to store EVMs, VVPATs, and control units since the two districts were bifurcated from Vellore in 2019. “The new facility will have two-tier security arrangements with round-the-clock surveillance, including CCTV cameras. Shymala Devi has appealed to tribals in the Yelagiri and Jawadhu Hills in the district to voluntarily surrender their illegal country made guns. In coordination with forest and revenue officials, the Tirupattur taluk police organised a series of awareness campaigns against using illegal country-made weapons, illicit arrack, and poaching of wild animals in the forests. The drive was also meant to be part of poll preparedness of the district police ahead of 2026 Assembly election. “Tribals can surrender illegal country-made guns to the nearest police station voluntarily. Their identities will not be disclosed, and no cases will be filed against them,” Ms. Devi said. Two persons murdered at Tasmac outlets in Tirupattur over previous enmity

Two persons were murdered in two Tasmac outlets near Ambur and Tirupattur town on Saturday over previous enmity. Police said the deceased were identified as S. Appunu (40), a native of Saminathapuram village near Ambur town, and B. Silabarasan (37), a native of Tirupattur town. Initial inquiry revealed that victim Appunu and his friend K. Gokul, a resident of Madhanur near Ambur, were consuming liquor in a Tasmac outlet near Madhanur village, off Chennai – Bengaluru Highway (NH 48). They were cab drivers in the area. Police said that the duo got into a heated argument when Appunu wanted his ₹20,000 back from Gokul, who borrowed the money a few months ago to meet his domestic needs. They exchanged blows on each other. In the impact, Appunu was badly injured. Immediately, Appunu was admitted at Government Taluk Hospital in Ambur town where doctors said that he was brought dead. Burglars decamped with 15 sovereigns of gold jewellery, silver articles, laptops, ₹20,000 cash from the house of an Army Havildar at Paniyandapalli village near Tirupattur on Tuesday. The police said that P. Venkatesan, 35, who was serving in the Indian Army, had built the house a few years ago. Since he returned home only during his long leave, his wife and children had been staying with their in-laws nearby. Every evening, Venkatesan’s father in-law K. Ravi, 64, visited their house to switch on the lights. They said that Ravi has been doing it for the past few months. This would have been observed by some people in the area. On Tuesday morning, when Ravi approached the house to switch off the lights, he found the main door of the house damaged. Three cupboards and an almirah were ruined. Man arrested for murder of woman near Tirupattur town

A 39-year-old man was arrested by Tirupattur Taluk Police on Saturday for killing an elderly woman in her thatched house at Athiyur village near Tirupattur town last week for money to consume liquor. The accused has been identified as K. Govindaraj, a wage labourer at Pulikuttai village in Tirupattur. Initial inquiry revealed that he was aware that the victim K. Dhanabakiyam, 90, stays alone in her house. On September 10, Govindaraj was in Athiyur village to borrow money from his relatives. When he noticed Dhanabakiyam sleeping alone in her house, he switched off the light and smothered her with a pillow. He then stole 1.5 gold sovereign earrings and cash. Later, he pledged the robbed jewels in his village to buy liquor. The police said that ever since her husband and farmer S. Kamaraj passed away a few years ago, Dhanabakiyam has been living alone. Her youngest daughter, V. Lightning injures father, son; kills three cows in Tirupattur

A 47-year-old man and his son were injured and three cows were killed in a lightning strike near Vaniyambadi and Natrampalli towns in Tirupattur on Sunday. When the incident occurred, the injured— K. Saravanan, a staff at a private engineering college in Vaniyambadi, and his son S. Magesh, 20, a college student— had taken their two cows for grazing on the outskirts of the Vellakuttai village near Vaniyambadi town, the police said. When it began to rain, the duo, along with the two cows, took shelter under a mango tree. However, at around 2 p.m., the tree was struck by lightning, killing the cows on the spot. The father and son survived while sustaining injuries. Farmers and other residents rushed them to the Government Taluk Hospital in the Vaniyambadi town. Election officials seize 60 sarees during a vehicle check near Vaniyambadi town on Wednesday. Election officials seized sarees and unaccounted cash to the tune of ₹14.68 lakh during vehicle checks in Vellore and Tirupattur districts on Wednesday as part of enforcing the moral code of conduct for the Lok Sabha election on April 19. Police said that members of a flying squad intercepted a car on Chettiyappanur Koot Road junction near Vaniyambadi town around 1.30 a.m. on Wednesday.
