New Delhi: India is sending around 15 tonnes of relief material to Myanmar after a 7.7 magnitude earthquake, and an aftershock of 6.8 magnitude struck the country on Friday afternoon and caused massive damage and claimed over 150 lives. The relief material is being sent to Myanmar on an IAF C 130 J aircraft from Hindon Air Force Station. The relief material includes tents, sleeping bags, blankets, ready-to-eat meals, water purifiers, hygiene kits, solar lamps, generator sets and essential medicines, including Paracetamol, antibiotics, canula, syringes, gloves, cotton bandages, and urine bags. India dispatches first tranche of urgent humanitarian aid for the people of Myanmar. Earlier on Friday, after the earthquake rocked Myanmar and neighbouring Thailand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended a helping hand and said the country stands ready to offer all assistance. Lisbon, Portugal: Officers have confiscated nearly 6.5 tonnes of cocaine from a semi-submersible submarine intercepted off the Azores while bound for the Iberian peninsula, Portugal’s judicial police said on Tuesday. The bust amounts to nearly a quarter of the record 23 tonnes seized across the whole of 2024 in Portugal, often considered one of the first points of entry for the drug into Europe. Drug traffickers have been caught using semi-submersible vessels, sometimes dubbed “narco-submarines”, to smuggle cocaine while attempting to evade detection. The vessel was intercepted “in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, around 500 nautical miles (more than 900 kilometres)” south of Portugal’s Azores archipelago, the judicial police statement said. Five crew members were onboard the vessel, which was used by an international crime ring, the statement added. Besides the Portuguese navy and airforce, international partners including the US Drug Enforcement Agency, the British National Crime Agency and the Spanish Guardia Civil contributed to the bust, according the police. This surge was driven by a 36% rise in international cargo, which reached 1.08 lakh MT, while domestic cargo grew by 5% to 72,395 MT, said a release from the airport authorities. Hyderabad airport solidified its position as one of India’s premier hubs for high-value pharmaceutical shipments, which constituted 72% of the total exports. The airport also saw a surge in the movement of electrical and electronic items, along with engineering goods. The United States of America and Europe emerged as the top export destinations, accounting for 51% of outbound shipments. An unidentified person has been booked after 11,000 kilograms of ganja were found on four tractors in Maharashtra`s Dhule district, a police officer said on Sunday. The contraband was seized in Shirpur taluka, inspector Jaypal Hire said. “We were alerted about ganja being cultivated through drip irrigation on a three-acre plot in Ambegaon, which is on the border with Madhya Pradesh. Between Saturday and Sunday, we seized four tractors with 11,000 kilograms of ganja. The plot is just 15 kilometres from a police station,” the officer said. Moorthy Nearly eight lakh tonnes of paddy has been procured from Tamil Nadu farmers by the civil supplies authorities.  Naturally, the major chunk of the paddy procured — around 6.2 lakh tonnes — has been provided by the Cauvery delta districts. Thanjavur leads the pack with about two lakh tonnes, according to the data compiled by the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation (TNCSC) on January 30. Tiruvarur is placed next to Thanjavur, accounting for approximately 1.6 lakh tonnes; Mayiladuthurai, 85,400 tonnes; and Cuddalore, 70,500 tonnes.  As regards the non-Cauvery delta districts, Chengalpattu leads the group with around 36,000 tonnes; Erode, 31,000 tonnes; and Tiruvallur, 23,300 tonnes. The group of districts has supplied 1.67 lakh tonnes.   The authorities have opened around 1,680 direct purchase centres in the Cauvery delta and 480 DPCs in the rest of the State.
