Trump Vs Toyota? Why US Cars Are A Rare Sight In Japan

Trump Vs Toyota? Why US Cars Are A Rare Sight In Japan

Tokyo: With their sleek curves and chrome grilles, the classic American cars on sale at Yosuke Fukuda’s yard ooze Californian cool but on Japanese roads new US vehicles are a rare sight — much to President Donald Trump’s annoyance. Japan’s Toyota is the second-top-selling automaker in the United States, where it shifted more than 2.3 million vehicles last year. Meanwhile US industry leader General Motors sold just 587 Chevrolets and 449 Cadillacs in Japan, while Ford pulled out of the tough Japanese market nearly a decade ago. And it’s not just an aversion to foreign brands — in 2024 Mercedes-Benz sold more than 53,000 vehicles and BMW sold over 52,000 including Minis. “They don’t take our cars, but we take MILLIONS of theirs!” Trump said in April, accusing Japan of treating its ally “very poorly on trade”. To try and rev up the US auto industry, Trump has imposed a 25 percent levy on imported vehicles, in a major blow to Tokyo. Many people in Japan admire vintage US cars, but when it comes to …

Price hikes, idled factories, layoffs: how car companies are responding to Trump’s tariffs

President Donald Trump’s 25 percent tariffs on all auto-related imports have been called “a debacle of epic proportions” and a sure-fire way to tank the auto market by crushing demand. Analysts have been predicting everything from $12,000 per vehicle price hikes to the possible “Cubanization” of the US car fleet. Now that they’ve had a few days to process the news, the automakers are starting to get their ducks in a row and make some moves. Here’s how each company is responding: Now that the tariffs are in effect, the German automaker is holding all vehicles assembled in Mexico and overseas at US ports until further notice, according to Automotive News. Audi currently has 37,000 units in dealer stock and at port — which remain unaffected by the new import fees and are ready to sell. Audi reportedly said it would be marking unaffected units with a $0 “No Added Import Fee” option code for easy tracking. “We are evaluating how to best proceed for our customers and our dealers,” Audi spokesperson Mark Dahncke said. …

Carlos Sainz chasing fifth Dakar Rally title, this time with a new manufacturer

Carlos Sainz is hoping to set a record as the Dakar Rally’s oldest champion while also becoming the first racer to win with five different car manufacturers in the two-week marathon, which begins this weekend in Saudi Arabia. Carlos Sainz Sr. made his Dakar debut in 2006, two years after Nasser Al Attiyah. He was the first of the two to be named to the roll of honour in 2010, but the Qatari champion eventually surpassed him and now has five trophies on his shelf. After winning his fourth race in a hybrid Audi last year, ‘El Matador’ is catching up and hopes to level the race with the Ford Raptor that he will drive for the M-Sport team. The Dakar Rally originated in 1978 as a race from Paris across the Sahara to Senegal’s capital, but was moved to South America in 2009 due to security concerns. It relocated to Saudi Arabia in 2020 and has since been the FIA World Rally Raid Championship’s flagship. His 18-year-long adversary Nasser Al Attiyah is in a …

Government Said to Expand EV Manufacturing Incentives After Tesla Disappointment

Government Said to Expand EV Manufacturing Incentives After Tesla Disappointment

India plans to expand electric vehicle incentives to automakers building models at existing factories in the country, instead of limiting the benefits to automakers willing to build new plants, a person with direct knowledge of the matter said. India’s EV policy, which is still being finalised, was originally designed to encourage Tesla to enter the market and manufacture locally but the US automaker backed off from those plans earlier this year. Other foreign automakers have shown interest in making EVs in India at existing and new factories, according to minutes of a meeting with India’s ministry of heavy industries that was seen by Reuters. It is hoped that changes to the policy will encourage EV investment from the likes of Toyota and Hyundai, the source said. Under the policy announced in March, an automaker investing at least $500 million (roughly Rs. 42,293 crore) to manufacture EVs in India with 50 percent of components sourced locally is entitled to a huge cut on import taxes – a drop to 15 percent from as high as 100 …

Suzuki teams up with Toyota on its first EV: the E Vitara

Suzuki and Toyota have been working together on a new 4WD-capable electric SUV, and in Italy yesterday, Suzuki revealed the fruits of the collaboration: a new compact called the E Vitara. It’s the automaker’s first EV, and it’s scheduled for production at Suzuki Motor Gujarat in India starting next spring. The E Vitara will launch in Europe, India, and Japan “around” the summer of next year, and there will be a Toyota-badged version, which will probably look a lot like the Urban SUV Concept Toyota revealed in 2023. Toyota similarly shares its mediocre bZ4X EV with Subaru, which is rebadged as the Solterra EV. Toyota and Suzuki have been slow to adopt EVs into their lineups, with Toyota refocusing on building more hybrids and a three-row electric SUV for the US market. As reported by Autocar, Suzuki’s previously announced target of launching multiple EVs by 2030 is on hold, with President Toshihiro Suzuki saying the company will “monitor the situation” due to cooling EV demand. As for the E Vitara, the vehicle will be powered …
