The move comes after Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis directed officials to expedite the transport project, which has remained pending for more than a decade due to challenges related to land acquisition, environmental clearances and changes in the city’s transport planning. Mumbai's metro-monorail-rail skywalk almost ready; here's all about it

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has completed around 90 per cent of the Mahalaxmi Multimodal Connectivity Project, bringing Mumbai closer to a fully integrated public transport network. The project, which has been built at a cost of Rs 60 crore, will connect Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk Monorail Station, Metro Line 3 and Mahalaxmi Suburban Railway Station through India’s first travellator-equipped skywalk. The construction work on the Mahalaxmi Multimodal Connectivity Project began in mid-2023, and the project has now reached around 90 per cent completion, according to MMRDA. Once opened, the new skywalk will make travelling between the three transport systems quicker, safer and more convenient for thousands of daily commuters, an official statement said. Faster and easier travel for commuters The integrated interchange is expected to reduce transfer time between the stations by around 20 minutes. It will also improve access to the Mumbai Monorail from South Mumbai and Worli, encouraging more people to use public transport instead of private vehicles. The region is witnessing growing traffic congestion due to rapid population growth, rising vehicles and other socio-economic factors. In a written statement in Lok Sabha on Thursday, Gadkari said: “The Government in Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has taken up projects with aggregate length of 2,105 km costing Rs 1,04,145 crore to decongest the Delhi National Capital Region.” The Union Minister was replying to a question by Lok Sabha MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, who sought details on the total cost of projects aimed at decongesting South Delhi. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that the first operational section of India’s Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project will begin services next year, reported the ANI. Speaking at the HYSEA GCCS & IT Roundtable in Hyderabad, the minister said the Surat-Bilimora stretch will be the first part of the country’s inaugural high-speed rail corridor to become operational. Vaishnaw said the remaining sections of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor will be opened gradually. According to the minister, the rollout will continue from Vapi to Surat, followed by Vapi to Ahmedabad, Ahmedabad to Thane, and finally Ahmedabad to Mumbai, the news agency reported. He said the phased opening will allow different parts of the corridor to become operational as construction progresses.
