Maharashtra was gripped by its third political crisis in four years on Wednesday after the Shiv Sena said that six out of the nine Lok Sabha members of the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) had signed a letter to form a separate grouping and plan to merge with the Sena, sparking a furious response from the latter amid confusion about the actual number of rebels. A senior Lok Sabha official told HT there was no confirmation if the speaker had received any letter from either the Shiv Sena or any other party. Bhiwandi was a thriving powerloom hub with a report from the National Institute for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (NI-MSME) stating that as many as 12 lakh powerlooms alone were situated in Bhiwandi with its industry’s turnover estimated at Rs 10,000 crore annually. Having transitioned from traditional handlooms, the powerlooms in Bhiwandi spin yarn to churn out raw material, known as grey cloth in local parlance, which is later sent across merchants and centres for finished textile products. Following concerns over the sudden emergence of red-faced monkeys in the Bhesan region of Junagadh district near Gir Wildlife Sanctuary, Gujarat forest department officials have begun capturing the animals for relocation to their natural habitat. On December 15, former State Board for Wildlife (SBWL) member and wildlife photographer Bhushan Pandya flagged the issue, writing to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel — who is also the SBWL chairperson — and warning that the unexpected appearance of Rhesus macaques could pose risks to the local ecosystem. Speaking to The Indian Express, Deputy Conservator of Forests, Junagadh, Akshay Joshi, said, “We have rescued 12 Rhesus macaques so far. Some villagers had complained that their agriculture and horticulture species were being damaged. The species are not native. So, for the safety of the wildlife and to preempt human-wildlife conflict, we decided to rescue these animals. Muhammad Sinwar, one of the remaining top commanders of Hamas in Gaza, was reportedly targeted by Israel in a massive airstrike at a hospital in the southern Gaza Strip on Tuesday afternoon.
