Aanand L Rai takes responsibility for Shah Rukh Khan’s Zero box office failure: ‘I never understood…’

It has been nearly seven years since superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s ambitious film Zero released and underperformed at the box office in 2018. However, the film still weighs on director Aanand L Rai. Mira Rajput has carved a path of herself while being married to actor Shahid Kapoor. She runs her own YouTube channel and also owns a wellness and skincare brand. In a recent interaction, Mira spoke about being called ‘star wife’ despite being independent and creating her own identity. On Social Media Star With Janice Season 5, Mira opposed kids of actors being tagged ‘star kids’. She said, “Maybe it was an association that one needed to make for recall value. But even if you put that on a kid and you say star kid, people don’t like listening to star kid for all of its nepotistic connotations. Yet, that term is still in use — it needs to kind of find its way out.” Mira Rajput also questioned the need to label someone as a “star wife”. “I have never understood the concept of a star wife, what does that mean? 10 years of Bombay Velvet: Anurag Kashyap’s messy love letter to cinema that was never understood | Bollywood News

10 years of Bombay Velvet: Anurag Kashyap’s messy love letter to cinema that was never understood | Bollywood News

Bombay Velvet, they say. is a film Anurag Kashyap could not have made, and yet, he did. There’s a sense of dissonance, as if the director’s name is attached, but his voice is missing. It bears no trace of his fire, none of the reckless pulse or crooked charm his characters breathe into screen-light. It moves without purpose, uncertain of its tone, unclear in its intent, an unfamiliar confusion for a filmmaker usually so sure of what he wants to say, and how. The humour feels misplaced, and the tragedy remains emotionally inert. And perhaps the cruellest irony: that a filmmaker known to bend genre to his will chose his most costly venture to make the most ordinary tale, a gangster saga draped in clichés, set in a city still being born, told in a way we’ve heard too many times before. But what if the lens through which we’ve viewed Bombay Velvet has always been misaligned? What if the fault isn’t Kashyap’s, but ours: for expecting a mirror, and resenting the unfamiliar reflection? We …

He also spoke about Ananya’s preparation for her character. “Akshay understood pretty early on that we were making the film for two reasons. One, we were making the film to honour the lives of people who died at Jallianwala Bagh. They came to celebrate Baisakhi and they left as martyrs. We wanted to honour their sacrifice. So he understood that core emotion and he also understood that we are bringing to light, a person’s life that the world doesn’t know about, which is Sankaran Nair. He came on board as far as these two …

In glimpses, we have seen the true potential of Sandalwood, but the collective effort and contribution are clearly missing. Last year, there were just a few big releases, including Martin, UI, and Max, but unfortunately, none of them shined at the Indian box office. It impacted the overall collection of the industry. In Sandalwood’s history, the best year was 2022, and the obvious reason is the release of KGF Chapter 2. The film was a riot at the Indian box office, and it amassed a historic sum. Not just this one film, but 2022 also witnessed the phenomenon of Kantara. It was an all-time blockbuster. There were other hits, too, including 777 Charlie. Overall, in 2022, the Kannada film industry saw a revenue of 810 crore gross (including the collection of Kannada versions only). 2024 was the worst …

‘I Also Never Understood…’: James Mangold Reflects On Walk Hard And Its Impact On The Musical Biopic Genre

‘I Also Never Understood…’: James Mangold Reflects On Walk Hard And Its Impact On The Musical Biopic Genre

James Mangold, the director and co-writer of the acclaimed 2005 Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line, recently shared his thoughts on the 2007 parody Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. The satirical film, starring John C. Reilly, aimed at the musical biopic genre with exaggerated tropes and humor. Despite its mockery of films like his own, Mangold found it enjoyable. “I found Walk Hard hilarious,” Mangold told Entertainment Weekly. “But I also never understood why satire would negate making the real thing anymore.” He compared the situation to other genres, saying, “I wasn’t frightened off any more than Robert Eggers should be frightened of making a monster movie in the face of Young Frankenstein or if another filmmaker might be frightened of making a Western in the face of Blazing Saddles.” While Walk Hard was created to poke fun at the genre, Mangold believes the parody didn’t halt the production of serious musical biopics. He shares that it’s unfair to say that if someone makes a satire of a genre, it somehow has put a tombstone …
