Heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds lashed parts of Delhi-NCR on Monday afternoon as a dust storm swept through the region, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for the national capital.
The sudden change in weather disrupted normal life and affected traffic movement across several areas. Residents witnessed dark skies, gusty winds and scattered thunderstorms as an active western disturbance influenced weather conditions across northwest India.
Delhi experienced steady rainfall from Monday morning, providing relief from the intense summer heat that had gripped the city in recent weeks.
The capital recorded partly cloudy conditions with temperatures around 38 degrees Celsius during the day.
According to forecasts, the maximum temperature was expected to touch 39 degrees Celsius, while the minimum was likely to remain around 27 degrees Celsius.
Several weather observatories, including Palam and Ayanagar, recorded light rainfall during the morning hours before heavier showers arrived later in the day.

Strong winds and thunderstorms expected
The IMD warned that scattered thunderstorms and gusty winds could continue across Delhi-NCR throughout the day.
Weather officials said the current spell is being driven by a western disturbance interacting with moisture-laden winds from both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal.
The combination has already triggered widespread rainfall and strong winds across several north Indian states, with wind speeds reaching up to 60-70 kmph in some areas.
Western disturbance influencing northwest India
IMD scientist Naresh Kumar said the western disturbance, currently positioned over north Haryana, has been responsible for the recent spell of wet weather across northwest India.
According to meteorologists, while rainfall intensity may gradually decrease in the coming days, light to moderate showers are expected to continue across the region.
Yellow alerts have been issued for Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab and Haryana, while parts of Rajasthan may also witness strong winds and unstable weather conditions.
Wet spell likely to continue until June 19
The IMD has forecast continued rainfall activity across northwest India until June 19.
States likely to experience isolated to scattered rainfall include Delhi-NCR, Haryana, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh
Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.
The weather department has also warned of isolated thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds in several districts during this period.
According to the IMD, maximum temperatures in northwest India are expected to rise gradually by 4 degrees Celsius to 6 degrees Celsius until June 17 before stabilising.
In contrast, central India is likely to witness a gradual fall in temperatures by 2 degrees Celsius to 3 degrees Celsius after June 17.
Most other parts of the country are expected to see little change in daytime temperatures through June 19.
