Cyborg cockroaches can now search underwater during rescue missions
Cyborg cockroaches manoeuvre through tiny spaces under rubble during search-and-rescue missions. Now, they can search flooded spaces. Researchers have developed a flexible “diving suit” that enables the insects to survive and move underwater, as well as in low-oxygen environments, for up to 3 hours. Equipped with infrared cameras, sensors and electrodes they can help to locate survivors in disaster-hit areas. In 2025, 10 roaches were sent to assist with efforts in Myanmar following a 7.7 magnitude earthquake that left more than 3000 dead. However, their use has been limited.
