Kalidas (right) with U.S. Consul General Laura Williams during a meeting in Visakhapatnam on Monday. | Photo Credit: Special Arrangement The Visakhapatnam-based Institute for Solid Waste Research and Ecological Balance (INSWAREB) is seeking to bridge the gap between industrial waste utilisation and nuclear infrastructure requirements through a proposed partnership with United States universities. Founders N. Bhanumathidas and N. Kalidas, veterans in blended cement research, have developed concepts using irradiation to create ‘Irradiated Cementitious Construction Materials’ (ICCMs). By transforming industrial byproducts such as fly ash and rice husk ash into amorphised silica, they aim to produce high-strength concrete that could enhance grade strengths to 65-85 MPa, while offering a sustainable alternative to costly silica fume. INSWAREB is also advocating the application of its patented ‘Nano Concrete’ (NAC), developed in 2010, for the construction of nuclear shield walls. The institute says NAC’s densified microstructure, which eliminates traditional aggregates and the associated cracks at the interstitial transition zone, could offer superior radiation attenuation. LUCKNOW State universities across Uttar Pradesh are gearing up to celebrate the foundation day of Gujarat on May 1 with a wide array of cultural, social, and health-oriented programmes. The celebrations are being organised following guidelines issued by governor and chancellor of state universities, Anandiben Patel. Campuses will be buzzing with various other activities, including fashion shows, ‘Bapu Bazaar’ exhibitions, film screenings and sports competitions. Three major universities of Kashmir have ended their MoUs in academic collaboration with Kashmir Care Foundation, a US-based organisation, less than a year after entering into the arrangements, officials said. The ties were ended in less a year after entering into arrangements, informed officials. (File) Kashmir University (KU), Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) and Sheri Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST-K) cancelled their MoUs with the foundation last month after receiving ‘adverse reports’ during the review process by the institutions and UT agencies, they added. Kashmir Care Foundation is a non-profit organisation run by Altaf A Lal and is based in Atlanta, USA. The three universities had inked the MoUs with the Kashmir Care Foundation at different intervals of time last year. “The Letter of Agreement (LoA) signed between SKUAST-K and Kashmir Care Foundation (KCF), Atlanta, USA on 15 April, 2025 is hereby cancelled with immediate effect,” a communication by prof Haroon R Naik , director research of SKUAST, said.
