It has also made amendments to the original notifications for the search committees, omitting the provisions where the committees submit their recommendations to the Governor-Chancellor. PM Modi: `India hit ‘terror universities’ in Pakistan, crushed their courage`

Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing the nation on Monday said that terrorist sites like Bhawalpur and Muridke were the universities of global terrorism which were attacked by the Indian Armed Forces during Operation Sindoor. “When Indian missiles and drones attacked those sites in Pakistan, it was not just the buildings of the terrorist organisations but their courage also shook. Terrorist sites like Bhawalpur and Muridke were the universities of global terrorism. All big terrorist attacks in the world, including 9/11 or big terrorist attacks in India, are somehow or the other connected to these terrorist sites,” PM Modi said in his address. PM Modi`s address comes two days after India and Pakistan reached an understanding to stop all firings and military actions on land, air and sea with immediate effect. The understanding was reached after four days of cross-border strikes that triggered fears of a wider conflict. India`s Operation Sindoor was launched on the intervening night of May 6 and 7 to avenge the killings of 26 people in the Pahalgam terror attack. Indian …

Cabinet sub-committee to hold another meeting on closure of nine new universities

Cabinet sub-committee to hold another meeting on closure of nine new universities

A Cabinet sub-committee has decided to hold another meeting after it was unable to take a unanimous decision on the closure of nine of the 10 new universities started during the BJP government tenure. The sub-committee, headed by Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, held its second meeting on Friday to review the financial condition of the universities. In the first meeting, it was decided to close nine universities, including the Maharani Cluster University and Nrupatunga University in Bengaluru apart from Bidar University. However, sources in the committee confirmed that the final decision could not be taken owing to some technical reasons. The Karnataka State Higher Education Council, which was formed to review the fund amount required for the first five years of running the new universities, had reported that ₹342 crore is required to cover the salaries of the teaching and the non-teaching staff, infrastructure, purchase of equipment, vehicles, furniture, and other items. “A final decision has not been taken on the closure of some universities that were established. A clear decision on this will …

Can private universities really help Kerala’s education system?

Can private universities really help Kerala’s education system?

Apr 29, 2025 07:00 IST First published on: Apr 29, 2025 at 07:00 IST Share There are areas in which Kerala has not been a leader. The setting up of private universities is one. But now an ideological rubicon has been crossed with the state’s legislative assembly recently passing the Kerala State Private Universities Bill (KSPUB). An article in this newspaper (‘Why Kerala has finally opened the door for private universities in the state’, March 29) stated that Kerala is the last state in the country to allow this. The change of mind has very likely been forced by the growing public attention drawn to the exit of college-age Malayalees to institutions outside the state. What will follow the legislative act is a matter of interest. Expectations would best be guided by both the experience with private universities elsewhere in the country and the long history of private presence in higher education in Kerala itself. There are 471 private universities in India. That makes for over 15 universities in a state on average, a number …

European Universities Strain for Neutrality Amid Political Chaos

European Universities Strain for Neutrality Amid Political Chaos

(Bloomberg) — Universities on both sides of the Atlantic were under intense pressure to deal with campus conflict over political issues long before the Trump administration started cracking down on higher education. In the past three years, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and Israel’s war on Gaza, prompted by a Hamas attack, have led to student protests around the world and put university administrators in the uncomfortable position of having to take political positions – or try their best not to.  “These days, there is hardly a crisis that doesn’t hit the campus with unbridled force,” said Ulrich Rüdiger, rector of RWTH Aachen, one of Germany’s top research universities. In countries like Switzerland and Germany, universities have generally tried to stay neutral, which has in turn raised questions about whether that’s a realistic goal, and what such neutrality might be in service of.  At the beginning of March, ETH Zurich received a questionnaire from the Trump administration asking whether a research project that receives US funding was in line with new government policies on diversity, equity …

Want to get into Harvard or Yale? These companies will help you, for a price

As it turned out, the experience made the student unsure about whether to pursue a career as a doctor. She wanted to work in the medical field but wasn’t sure about the role. Eventually, with the help of the counsellor and after evaluating various options, she realized that instead of spending time in the trenches with patients, she wanted to work in the research field, in the more sanitized environs of a lab. Over the next couple of years, the counsellor guided her on medical research options through video calls and personal sessions and sent her journals, articles and podcasts. Today, the student has been accepted into the elite Johns Hopkins University for a course in biomedical engineering, a field that combines biology and engineering to drive technological advances in medical devices, procedures, and patient care. She heads for the US this August. The counsellor who helped the student land the coveted seat, outperforming applicants from around the world, was Namrata Pandey. Based in Delhi, Pandey is the founder and chief mentor of La Mentoraa, …

Over 50 foreign universities applied to UGC for approval, 3 are operating: Pradhan | Education News

Three foreign universities are currently operating in India, and the University Grants Commission (UGC) is considering approving over 50 high-quality foreign universities to benefit students, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan informed the Parliament on Wednesday. Responding during the Question Hour in Rajya Sabha, Pradhan highlighted that approximately 14-15 lakh Indian students study abroad, leading to a significant outflow of resources. To address this and promote higher research within India, the UGC has amended its regulations to facilitate the entry of foreign universities. He clarified that, contrary to earlier figures, three foreign universities are already operating in India. Additionally, over 50 foreign universities are in discussions with various state governments and have applied for UGC approval. He also said that the government’s commitment to institutional autonomy, assuring that universities would continue to operate with academic independence.
