Uttarakhand UCC Amendment Gets Nod From Lok Bhavan | India News

(File Photo: PTI) The Uttarakhand Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Amendment Ordinance has received approval from the Lok Bhavan, sources said on Monday. Earlier, the UCC amendment bill had been sent to Lok Bhavan but was returned due to technical reasons. Following this, the state government drafted the amendment in the form of an ordinance, which has now been given the green light by Lok Bhavan. After being passed in January, 2024, further amendments to the UCC were considered in the Monsoon Session of August 2025 to address aspects such as penalties for entering relationships under false pretences and granting new powers to the Registrar General. What Is the UCC? The UCC was implemented on January 27, 2025, with Uttarakhand emerging as the first state in India to implement the UCC into law. BJP-ruled Uttarakhand has passed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill New Delhi: BJP-ruled Uttarakhand has become the first state to pass the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill, a move that could encourage other BJP-ruled states to follow suit. Rajasthan has already said it wants to introduce a UCC bill in the next assembly session. UCC refers to a common set of laws that are applicable to all Indian citizens, and is not based on religion in dealing with marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption, among other personal matters. “Today is an important day for Uttarakhand. We have passed a bill that people across the country have been demanding for a long time, and Uttarakhand is the first to pass it. Uttarakhand on Wednesday became the first state in India to implement the Uniform Civil Code after the state assembly passed the UCC bill, which may serve as a template for other BJP-run states to enact similar legislation.
