Uttarakhand Uniform Civil Code Amendment Ordinance approved by Lok Bhavan.

The Uttarakhand Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Amendment Ordinance has received approval from the Lok Bhavan, sources said on Monday.
Earlier, the UCC amendment bill had been sent to Lok Bhavan but was returned due to technical reasons. Following this, the state government drafted the amendment in the form of an ordinance, which has now been given the green light by Lok Bhavan.
After being passed in January, 2024, further amendments to the UCC were considered in the Monsoon Session of August 2025 to address aspects such as penalties for entering relationships under false pretences and granting new powers to the Registrar General.
What Is the UCC?
The UCC was implemented on January 27, 2025, with Uttarakhand emerging as the first state in India to implement the UCC into law.
The Uniform Civil Code takes into account matters related to marriage, divorce, inheritance, live-in-relationships, and relates issues. It prescribes a uniform age for marriage for both men and women; at the same time, it implements strict provisions for divorce and related procedures across all religions.
One of the controversial aspects of the UCC was several conditions related to the registration of marriage and live-in relationships.
In October, 2025, the Uttarakhand government filed a 78-page affidavit in the Nainital High Court saying that a few provisions of rules under the UCC were amended.
The government highlighted that the actions were taken to protect the privacy of live-in couples.
In the affidavit, the government underlined that several conditions related to the registration of marriage and live-in relationships would be scrapped, allowing individuals to voluntarily register their relationship or marriage. Previously, it was mandatory to inform the parents if one of the couple was below 21.
However, as per the proposed amendments, authorities will no longer be required to inform the parents.
