Calcutta HC grants interim relief to Abhishek Banerjee in signature forgery case

The Calcutta High Court on Thursday granted TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee interim protection from any coercive action in a signature forgery case over the party`s choice of Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal assembly. Justice Kausik Chanda, while granting interim protection for three weeks, directed Banerjee to appear before the CID at its headquarters, Bhabani Bhaban, here by 6 pm on Thursday for questioning in the case. Banerjee`s lawyer stated that the MP is scheduled to arrive in Kolkata from Delhi around 4 pm. The matter will come up for hearing again after two weeks. The controversy centres around a meeting called by Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee at her Kalighat residence, where discussions were held regarding the naming of the LoP. Allegations have surfaced that signatures of several MLAs were affixed on related documents despite their absence from the meeting, triggering a political storm in the state. Sheikh, a prime accused in Bogtui violence, was found dead on Monday in the washroom of the Central agency’s camp office set up in a guest house, with CBI officials claiming that he committed suicide.
