29 of 73 trees on Guntur road widening stretch can be transplanted, finds ANU study

Vijaya Kumar A scientific assessment by the Departments of Botany and Microbiology at Acharya Nagarjuna University has found that 29 of the 73 affected trees can be safely transplanted, while the remaining 44 are unsuitable for relocation, as the Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) undertakes road widening works from Hanumayya Company to Brindavan Gardens Centre. The study was conducted to determine the feasibility of preserving mature avenue trees that need to be removed or shifted for the project. Municipal Commissioner K. Mayur Ashok said the civic body was committed to protecting the city’s green cover by relocating as many healthy trees as possible through scientifically approved methods. He said the university’s assessment would guide every stage of the exercise. According to the inspection report, the 44 trees identified for removal were severely damaged by termite and wood-boring insect infestations, which had weakened their structural stability. All the acquisitions have been for road widening requirements in relation to several projects. Between 2007 and 2026, a total 5,231 properties have been acquired by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, for various projects including Hyderabad Metro Rail, Strategic Road Development Plan, Charminar Pedestrianisation Project, road development by joining the missing links, junction improvements, and the latest Hyderabad City Innovative and Transformative Infrastructure project. At a time when India is accelerating free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations to diversify exports and soften the impact of US tariffs, a Niti Aayog report has said that India’s trade deficit with its FTA partner countries is rising sharply, but exports from sunrise industries such as electronics are growing their foothold globally. The Niti Aayog’s ‘Trade Watch Quarterly’ report released Tuesday said India’s trade deficit with FTA partners rose 59.2 per cent between April and June last year compared to the previous year as imports jumped by 10 per cent to $65.3 billion and exports declined by 9 per cent to $38.7 billion. In a bid to ease traffic congestion on the busy Katraj-Kondhwa road, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has fast-tracked construction of an alternative route. Municipal commissioner Naval Kishore Ram conducted an on-site inspection of the work near Shatrunjay Temple on Saturday afternoon and directed officials to ensure speedy and high-quality completion. The civic body has already made financial provisions for land acquisition to widen the main road to 50 metres, with plans to take up full-scale development once land possession is completed.
