New study reveals stark gender gaps in India’s public transport workforce

A nationwide study has raised serious concerns about the lack of gender inclusivity in India’s public bus systems, both in terms of women’s workforce participation and the everyday challenges faced by women commuters. The report, Gender Inclusivity in India’s Public Transport, was released in November by ITDP India and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH under the Indo-German development project Sustainable Urban Mobility – Air Quality, Climate Action, Accessibility (SUM-ACA), commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Women make up only 0.16 per cent of bus drivers Using data from the Association of State Road Transport Undertakings (ASRTU), the report shows that women account for just 0.16 per cent of driver positions and 15 per cent of conductor roles across the country. Women staff reported multiple barriers, inadequate toilets and resting spaces in depots, workplace harassment, and long shifts with significant health risks. To understand workplace realities, ITDP India conducted Focus Group Discussions in Pune, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Delhi, involving 74 women staff from State Transport Undertakings (STUs). Women …

65 pc of students consider AI skills critical for future jobs: univ survey

New Delhi, Oct 9 (PTI) About 65 per cent of students think that artificial intelligence (AI) skills are extremely important for their future careers, according to a survey released on Thursday. The AI is rapidly transforming industries worldwide, making AI literacy one of the most critical skills for tomorrow’s workforce, Sanjay Ghodawat University (SGU), which conducted the survey, said in a statement. A new survey by the SGU, titled ‘The Importance of AI Skills in Higher Education’, revealed that over 65 per cent of college students consider AI skills extremely important for their future careers. The survey conducted among 5,000 students across five cities, including Pune, Mumbai, Kolhapur, Delhi, and Bengaluru in STEM, business, humanities, and social sciences, signals a significant shift in student attitudes as AI continues to reshape the job industry globally. Notably, 26 per cent of respondents strongly support curriculum reform, calling for mandatory integration of AI-based learning and skill-building programs in higher education.
