Cabinet sub-committee gives approval to declare four forest areas as eco-sensitive zones

The Cabinet sub-committee in a meeting held on Thursday under the chairmanship of Environment Minister Eshwar Khandre gave its approval for the declaration of eco-sensitive zones for four forest areas. They are Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary in Chikkamagaluru district, Bankapura Wolf Sanctuary in Koppal, Uttaragudda Wildlife Sanctuary in Chitradurga, and Arsikere Bear Sanctuary in Hassan district. No hindrance to public Mr. Khandre said that declaring eco-sensitive zones around wildlife sanctuaries would not cause any hindrance to the public or locals. He added that in four of the State’s wildlife sanctuaries, the eco-sensitive zone would range from a minimum of 1 km to a maximum of 10 km. However, in areas with human settlements or private land, the zone would be limited to just 1 km, ensuring that locals and farmers face no inconvenience. As per the Ministry of Forest, Environment, and Climate Change guidelines, activities in eco-sensitive zones are categorised into promoted, regulated, and prohibited. Of the 23 species of vultures found in the world, nine are in India and of them four are critically endangered. India’s three Gyps species vulture population, once around 40 million in the 1980s, suffered a drastic 90% decline by the 1990s to about 4 million. Over the next decade, the population further dropped by 99%, reducing the number to approximately 40,000. Further declines over the years have left the current estimated population at around 20,000 vultures. The three species include Long-billed Vulture, White-backed Vulture, and Slender-billed Vulture. The Kerala government on Tuesday imposed lockdown-like restrictions at containment zones in Malappuram where a 24-year-old recently died due to Nipah infection. Earlier in the day, Kerala Health Minister Veena George said 126 people in Malappuram were isolated as high-risk individuals after the death a 24-year-old man recently due to Nipah infection and of them, 13 were tested and their samples were found negative. 175 people in contact list of deceased patient Veena George had on Monday said that currently there are 175 people in the contact list of the deceased patient. “Out of them, 74 are health workers. 126 are primary contact while 49 are in the secondary contact list,” the minister said. Out of the primary contact list, 104 are under high risk category. Ten people are under treatment at Manjeri medical college hospital, the minister said, adding that the samples of 13 people have been sent for testing. The progress of village relocation is very slow and it poses grave concern in the light of tiger conservation,” said the letter written by G.S. Bharadwaj, Additional DGF (Project Tiger) and Member Secretary, NTCA to Subhash Malkede, Chief Wildlife Warden, Karnataka on June 19 this year. Rajkot: After a massive fire at a gaming zone in Rajkot claimed at least 28 lives on Saturday, the Gujarat government has now issued a directive to register cases against the owners of all such establishments that are being run flouting the norms. According to the directive, cases will be filed against those lacking NOCs during the verification process, invoking strict sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and imposing non-bailable clauses. The directive has been sent to all the collectors and municipal commissioners across the state for immediate enforcement. Subsequently, the district police chiefs have been notified, with explicit instructions to register cases and take stringent action against the violators. The mandate requires a thorough inspection of all the locations where large gatherings take place, including temples, mosques, schools, colleges, malls, theaters, food markets, densely populated areas, and gaming zones.
