“That is Potential” Aakash Chopra Backs Dhruv Jurel’s Selection for England’s T20Is

The former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has defended Dhruv Jurel’s selection in India’s squad for England T20Is.

He emphasized Jurel’s potential and urged him to have patience despite the youngster’s struggles against England amid calls for Ruturaj Gaikwad‘s inclusion.

Dhruv Jurel faced criticism following his underwhelming performance in the ongoing T20I series against England, with many questioning his place in the squad.

Jurel has played in three T20Is so far, scoring only 10 runs including his 4 runs in the second T20I of the England tour of India.

Critics have pointed out his poor performance with fans on social media suggesting Gaikwad as a potential replacement.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Jurel’s potential and the need for patience, stating that his selection was justified due to India’s requirement for an additional wk-batter.

“Dhruv Jurel has been picked because you need a second wicketkeeper in the team. It’s a five-match series, so you really want a second keeper. He has been picked because of one word, and that is potential. I don’t mind it,” Aakash Chopra said.

“Questions might be asked many times by comparing players’ performances. However, in the end, as a selector, you need to see the potential. You need to take a brave call at times, for which you might be criticized occasionally,” he added.

Dhruv Jurel made an impressive test debut against England last year, playing a crucial role in India’s middle order.

His performance included a notable 49-run knock in Rajkot. However, his form dipped during the Border Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, when he managed just 11 and 1 runs in Perth test.

He made his T20I debut during India’s series against Zimbabwe, transitioning in the T20I setup. Jurel has been struggled a middle order, while Sanju Samson has taken on wicketkeeping duties.

Chopra’s backing highlights the importance of nurturing young players and giving them time to adapt to the demands of international cricket.

India secured a 2-0 lead in the ongoing T20I series, and fans will be exciting on Jurel to see if he can overcome the occasion. The third match of the series will be played on January 28 at Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium.
