Former Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress leader Mukul Sangma has been recognized as the Leader of Opposition in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
The path to this development was paved when three of the Congress’s four MLAs jumped ship to the National People’s Party on August 19, leaving Ronnie Lyngdoh as the sole Congress member in the legislative assembly. Lyngdoh was the Leader of Opposition but lost his eligibility for the position because of this development.
The TMC has five MLAs in the state and earlier this week, Sangma staked claim to the position of LOP and received support from Lyngdoh. With Lyngdoh’s support, the Opposition number under Sangma’s leadership is six MLAs, which is one-tenth of the strength of the 60-member house.
