The Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer has claimed that he wants himself at No. 3 in T20s via the upcoming IPL 2025 season.
Shreyas Iyer is in a new franchise after leading Kolkata Knight Riders to the title last season after Punjab Kings bought him for INR 26.75 crore. The 30-year old played in the KKR’s middle order for the last season where the side claimed their third IPL title.
However, during the Champions Trophy Shreyas Iyer made a big impact playing at No. 4 and ahead of the IPL 2025 eyeing up a new role.
Speaking at the pre-tournament press-conference, Shreyas Iyer stated that he wants to make a mark at the No. 3 sport for punjab this season, and he is quite clear about his spot.
Shreyas Iyer has made a good impact batting at No.3 in T20Is as he has scored 530 runs in 19 matches for India. However, his last T20I game came all the way back in 2023 and Shreyas feels that the IPL will be a chance for him to make his mark.
“We already know that IPL is an integral part of Indian cricket. And If I would want to mark myself at some position in T20, it would be number 3. And that’s what I’m focusing at. I wouldn’t say that we are planning and thinking about what number I will be batting.”
“This time I’m quite clear about that position. And I’m going to be focusing on that number. As long as coach approves of me,” said Shreyas Iyer.
PBKS are one of the franchises who are yet to win a title in their history and haven’t made it to playoffs since 2014.
The 30 year old batter said that importance would be given to winning the trophy. He feels that he has no pressure of Punjab having never won the IPL and sees this as an opportunity.
“The importance is to win the trophy. There is no pressure (of Punjab having never won the IPL). It is an opportunity,” said Shreyas.
Shreyas Iyer will be leading Punjab Kings in the IPL 2025 campaign and will play their first match against Gujarat Titans on March 25 at Narendra Modi Stadium.
