Kamal Haasan’s ‘Kannada born from Tamil’ comment backfires, Thug Life gets ban threats
Kamal Haasan has courted controversy with his recent Tamil-Kannada remark during Thug Life event. The comment hasn;t gone down well with many.
Kamal Haasan has been one of the Indian superstars who often finds his name in news for both his opinions and acting prowess. Kamal Haasan’s upcoming film might face a ban in Tamil Nadu following his controversial statement linking the origins of origins of the Kannada language to Tamil. The language issue, already a hot topic in India, has gained further momentum after the popular actor’s statement.
At the Thug Life audio launch in Chennai while addressing the crowd, Kamal Haasan started his speech by saying, “Uyire Urave Tamizhe,” which means “my life and my family is Tamil language.”
He then added, “Actor Shivarajkumar is my family living in another state. That’s why he is here. That’s why when I started my speech, I said ‘my life and my family is Tamil’. Your language (Kannada) was born out of Tamil. So you are included in that line.”
While the statement was meant in good faith, it didn’t sit right with many in Karnataka, especially groups like Kannada Rakshana Vedike, who were quick to slam Kamal Haasan’s remarks. Praveen Shetty, a leader of the group, said, “Kamal Haasan said Tamil is better than Kannada and Kannada only after Tamil was born. We are warning Kamal, you need business in Karnataka? And yet insulting Kannada.”
A couple of weeks ago Sonu Nigam also found himself in a similar controversy involving language. While performing for an event held at East Point College of Engineering and Technology in Bengaluru, the singer reprimanded a fan who had allegedly demanded a Kannada song in a disrespectful manner, in response, the star singer compared the fan’s attitude to that of the terrorists behind the Pahalgam attack.
