The government said the move will allow police personnel to be used more effectively, especially at a time when maintaining public safety.

The Chhattisgarh government has removed the practice of giving a Guard of Honour to Ministers and senior police officers during routine visits and inspections. The Home Department has issued an order to this effect, bringing the change into force immediately.

The decision follows a review initiated by Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Vijay Sharma, who called for an assessment of the long-standing protocol. The move is aimed at reducing ceremonial duties and allowing police personnel to focus more on law and order, security and public service.

Officials said the revised rules apply to regular movements such as district tours, inspections and arrivals or departures within the state. Under the new system, no ceremonial salute will be provided during such routine engagements.

“During routine visits, arrivals/departures, and inspections within the state, Salami Guard (Guard of Honour) shall no longer be provided to The Hon’ble Home Minister of the State and all other Hon’ble Ministers, The Director General of Police and other senior police officers,” the order read.

The government said the step will help ensure better utilisation of police resources, particularly at a time when law enforcement agencies are expected to prioritise public safety and efficient policing over ceremonial protocols.

The change marks a shift away from colonial-era traditions and reflects the state’s effort to modernise administrative practices while improving on-ground policing.
