Chum Darang Reacts To Death Of Tripura Student In Racial Attack

On Monday, Chum Darang took to her Instagram stories to re-share a post that read, “He is gone because of racism. Justice for Anjel Chakma. Stop calling us ‘Chinese’. We are Indians.” Chum expressed her grief and wrote, “2025 and still, the same story. Will it ever change? I am sorry, Anjel.” In another Instagram story, she re-shared a post about Anjel’s last words reportedly being, “I’m an Indian.” Chum expressed her heartbreak and wrote, “Shame.”

Chum Darang, who hails from Arunachal Pradesh, has frequently spoken about the racism she has faced throughout her life. She has used her platform to raise awareness about discrimination against people from the Northeast.

What Happened To Anjel?

Anjel Chakma, a 24-year-old final-year MBA student from Nandanagar in Unakoti district of Tripura, died after being stabbed during a racist attack in Dehradun. Anjel and his younger brother Michael were stopped by a group of men on December 9, who allegedly hurled racial slurs at them, leading to a confrontation at a local market. Witnesses said the men referred to the brothers as “Chinese”.

Friends said Anjel calmly challenged the abuse. “We are not Chinese. We are Indians. What certificate should we show to prove that?” he reportedly said. Moments later, the situation escalated. The men allegedly attacked the brothers with knives while continuing to abuse them. Anjel suffered severe injuries to his neck and spine. He succumbed to his injuries on Friday. Michael was also injured and remains in serious condition.
