BJP left with no option but to distract people, it won’t work in Maharashtra polls: Rahul Gandhi | Mumbai News

As the Maharashtra Assembly election campaign is drawing to a close, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi alleged on Monday that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was using divisive language to distract attention from unemployment and inflation.

He also took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “ek hai toh safe hai” slogan.

“The real issue of this election is about employment. There is growing unemployment in Maharashtra, as eight projects worth Rs 7 lakh crore are going out of Maharashtra and five lakh jobs are lost. Dharavi land that belongs to people of Mumbai worth Rs 1 lakh crore is being given to one person. Prices of agri products are falling. Inflation is an issue. The BJP cannot do anything on this. There will be attempts to distract by using the words of Dharmayuddh. They are left with no option but to do so,” Gandhi said at a press conference.

Gandhi said these attempts would not have an impact on voters in Wednesday’s election.

Gandhi targeted Modi over his new slogan by showing a treasury box along with a photo of Modi, industrialist Gautam Adani, and the Dharavi redevelopment map.

Festive offer

“This is the real safe (treasury box) he is worried about. Without the support of the prime minister of India, he (Adani) cannot take the land of Dharavi away from its people. This is the real election issue,” he said, adding one businessman was getting all the projects in ports, airports, mines, Dharavi redevelopment, etc.

“The issue that is the background and foreground in this election is whether the wealth of Maharashtra should be given to people of Maharashtra or to one person,” said Gandhi, listing out eight industrial projects that the Opposition claims to have left the state for Gujarat.

He said projects worth Rs 7 lakh crore and five lakh jobs had thus been snatched from the state.

Gandhi said that if voted to power, the Maha Vikas Aghadi would protect the interests of Maharashtra’s people.

“What is happening in Dharavi is against the interests of people of Maharashtra, Mumbai and Dharavi. We, along with Uddhav Thackeray, are in agreement on the Dharavi issue,” he added.
