FIDE Chess Candidates 2024 Round 5 Live Updates: After the first rest day of the 2024 Candidates chess tournament, the 16 players are back to the chessboard for Round 5 on Tuesday at Toronto’s Great Hall.

The big clashes of the day at the tournament are between Praggnanandhaa R and points table leader Ian Nepomniachtchi while Vidit Santosh Gujrathi is taking on the top-seeded player Fabiano Caruana, who is the World No 2. The third Indian in the fray at the Open category of the Candidates, Gukesh, is facing the lowest rated player in the Open category: Nijat Abasov.

Over in the women’s section, India’s Vaishali Rameshbabu is taking on Anna Muzychuk while the veteran Humpy Koneru is going face-to-face against Aleksandra Goryachkina.

Here are the other battles at the Candidates not involving Indian players: Alireza Firouzja vs Hikaru Nakamura, Lei Tingjie vs Kateryna Lagno and Tan Zhongyi vs Nurgyul Salimova.

While Nepomniachtchi sits on top of the Candidates 2024 standings after four games, India’s Gukesh is in the chasing pack along with Caruana, just half a point behind the Russian.

In the women’s section at the 2024 Candidates, Tan Zhongyi leads the standings while India’s Vaishali and Humpy are among the bottom half of the table.
