Chief Justice Surya Kant on Friday condemned the deadly fire at a Goa nightclub that claimed 25 lives earlier this month, expressing deep sorrow over the tragedy and offering condolences to the families of the victims.

The Chief Justice made the remarks while inaugurating the Goa State Legal Services Authority’s 30-day special awareness campaign titled “Drug Abuse – Drugs: A Menace to the Society” at the Bombay High Court in Goa.

Addressing the gathering, Justice Kant described the incident as deeply distressing and underscored the need for accountability and public awareness to prevent such tragedies.

The fire broke out at the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in Arpora village on December 6, resulting in one of the deadliest nightclub disasters in the state’s recent history.

His comments came against the backdrop of ongoing legal proceedings in the case.

Today, a Goa court extended the police custody of brothers Saurabh and Gaurav Luthra, the owners of the nightclub, till December 29. Their initial 10-day police remand had ended on Friday.

According to their counsel, Parag Rao, the Luthra brothers did not oppose the extension of custody and have expressed willingness to cooperate with the investigation.

The brothers were deported from Thailand on December 17 after allegedly fleeing the country hours after the fire incident.

Police officials said the Luthras were not present at the nightclub at the time of the blaze. A case has been registered against them by Anjuna police under charges including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, along with other relevant offences.

So far, eight people have been arrested in connection with the case.

Authorities have also initiated the process to issue a Blue Corner Notice against British national Surinder Kumar Khosla, another accused who is believed to have fled to the United Kingdom.
