Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma’s remarks came after three women from Arunachal Pradesh faced racism during a dispute with their neighbours in Delhi.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Sunday said discrimination against people of Northeast India must stop after three women from Arunachal Pradesh were allegedly subjected to racial slurs and intimidation by their neighbours in Delhi.

An FIR under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was registered against two individuals – identified as Harsh Singh and his wife Ruby Jain – for outraging a woman’s modesty and promoting enmity on grounds of religion, race, etc.

Taking to X, Sangma wrote, “Discrimination against North East People must stop.”

The incident took place on February 20, when the three women from Arunachal Pradesh had called an electrician at their fourth-floor flat in the afternoon to get an air conditioner installed. During the process, dust and debris from the installation fell on the first floor below, prompting objections from their neighbours, a police officer told news agency PTI.

A disagreement ensued, which quickly turned ugly as the couple allegedly hurled derogatory and racial abuses targeting them and the northeastern community. A purported video of the incident went viral on social media, in which the accused woman was heard saying, “Are you sitting here to do business? Have you opened a massage parlour at home?”

The accused woman was also seen saying that the man they are talking to is the son of a “big politician”. One of the Northeastern women confronted the accused, saying, “You made false allegations that I drink alcohol. Go check my room if you find any bottles there.”

The Arunachali women further alleged that they were subjected to racist abuse. The accused duo, in the video, can be heard calling the victims “gutter-chaap”.

No arrests have been made so far, despite an FIR filed under BNS sections 79 (word intended to insult a woman’s modesty), 351(2) (criminal intimidation), 3(5) (common intention) and 196 (promoting enmity on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc.).

“No physical injuries were reported. However, the complainants have alleged mental harassment and humiliation,” the senior officer told PTI. The women have demanded a formal apology from the accused, stating that the remarks were not merely personal but targeted the dignity of the northeastern community.
