Russian President Vladimir Putin was hosted to a pure vegetarian state banquet at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Friday, where a curated spread of regional Indian dishes was served on a traditional thali.

The dinner, hosted by President Droupadi Murmu, followed the ceremonial welcome and marked one of the key formal events of Putin’s two-day visit to India, as well as his final engagement before returning to Moscow.

The banquet began with Murungelai Chaaru, a light, warming soup, before guests were served an array of vegetarian appetisers. These included Gucchi Doon Chetin, Kaale Chane ke Shikampuri, and Vegetable Jhol Momo with Chutney, reflecting flavours from Kashmir to the eastern Himalayas.

For the main course, Rashtrapati Bhavan’s chefs presented a wide selection of dishes showcasing winter produce and classic Indian techniques.

The spread featured Zafrani Paneer Roll, Palak Methi Mattar Ka Saag, Tandoori Bharwan Aloo, Achaari Baingan, and Yellow Dal Tadka. These were accompanied by Dry Fruit and Saffron Pulao and a choice of Indian breads including Lachha Paratha, Magaz Naan, Satanaj Roti, Missi Roti, and Biscuity Roti.

The dessert course offered two traditional favourites: Badam ka Halwa and Kesar-Pista Kulfi, along with a selection of fresh fruits. The table also featured Gur Sandesh and Murakku, adding a touch of regional sweetness and crunch.

A variety of beverages—Pomegranate, Orange, and Carrot & Ginger—were served alongside salads such as Beetroot, Khaman Kakdi, and Shakarkandi Papdi Chaat with Kamrak Boondi Raita. Accompaniments included Gongura Pickle, Mango Chutney, and Banana Chips.

In the background, the Naval band and a classical ensemble performed a blend of Indian and Russian pieces to highlight the cultural ties between the two nations.

The Naval band played a song from Shah Rukh Khan’s film Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani and also performed Kalinka, the popular Russian folk tune. The ensemble presented Amritavarshini and Nalinkanthi ragas on the sarod, sarangi and tabla.
