CSK IPL 2025 retained and released players: Chennai Super Kings have retained five players with Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ravindra Jadeja costing them Rs 18 crore each. They have retained Sri Lanka pacer Matheesha Pathirana for Rs 13 crore and Shivam Dube for a Rs 12 crore price tag.
As expected, they have also retained their legendary talisman, MS Dhoni. The 43-year-old Dhoni has been retained for Rs 4 crore, with the Super Kings making full use of the modified uncapped player retention rule.
According to the rule, the uncapped player list will also include internationals who have not featured in any match for India in the last five years or have not attained a BCCI central contract in the same period.
At the start of their previous auction cycle in 2022, CSK had retained Dhoni, Jadeja, Gaikwad and Moeen Ali.
How players retention works in IPL
Player retention has become a significantly important trick for any IPL team going into the new mega auction cycle of three years, which started from IPL 2025.
Teams are allowed to retain a maximum of six players and have an overall allotted budget of Rs 120 crore for the retention as well as mega auction.
If a franchise opts to retain six players, they can retain a maximum of five capped and two uncapped players in either the 5+1 or 4+2 combination. While the capped players are segregated into three brackets ranging from Rs 18 crore to Rs 11 crore, an uncapped player can be retained at Rs 4 crore.
