Police gets Ravi Pujari’s custody until January 27
Notorious gangster Ravi Pujari has been formally arrested in connection with a 2018 extortion case involving Bollywood choreographer and filmmaker Remo D’Souza and his wife, Lizelle D’Souza, Mumbai Police officials said.
Although Pujari has been lodged in jail since his deportation from Senegal five years ago, he had not been taken into custody in this particular case until now.
The Mumbai Police Crime Branch produced him before the Esplanade Court on Thursday, which remanded him to police custody till January 27.
According to police sources, Pujari allegedly issued threats to the D’Souzas at the behest of Satyendra Tyagi, who is already named as an accused in the case.
Investigators said that between October 2016 and February 2018, Pujari repeatedly contacted Remo D’Souza, his wife and their manager, allegedly issuing threats and demanding money.
The accused is said to have pressured the couple to expedite the release of the film Death of Amar and sought Rs 50 lakh to “resolve” the matter.
The case traces back to a business agreement signed in 2018 between Remo D’Souza and Satyendra Tyagi for a film titled Amar Must Die.
A dispute later erupted over financial and distribution rights, with Tyagi claiming he had invested in the project and was owed Rs 5 crore.
Police said Tyagi allegedly enlisted Ravi Pujari to recover the money, following which Pujari is accused of making extortion calls and issuing threats to the D’Souzas and their associates.
Further investigation into the case is ongoing.
