Goa Police have launched an international search for nightclub owners Saurabh and Gaurav Luthra after they confirmed the brothers flew to Phuket just hours after a massive fire tore through the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in Arpora, killing 25 people and injuring six.

Police said an FIR was registered soon after the blaze, following which a team was dispatched to Delhi to raid the brothers’ residences.

Officers found both premises locked, prompting investigators to paste legal notices at the locations. By the evening of December 7, Lookout Circulars (LOCs) were issued against both accused at the request of the Goa Police.

Immigration authorities later informed investigators that the Luthra brothers had boarded IndiGo flight 6E 1073 to Phuket at 5:30 am on December 7, barely hours after the fire broke out around midnight.

Police officials said the timing of their departure indicated an attempt to evade investigation. Goa Police have now sought assistance from the Interpol Division of the CBI to trace and detain the duo abroad.

Meanwhile, Delhi resident Bharat Kohli, linked to the nightclub’s operations, has been detained and brought to Goa on transit remand for further questioning.

Post-mortem examinations of all 25 victims have been completed and the bodies handed over to their families.

The inferno, which reduced the upscale Birch by Romeo Lane to ashes, has been described as a moment of “irreparable sorrow and overwhelming distress” by co-owner Saurabh Luthra in an earlier social media statement.

“The management expresses profound grief and is deeply shaken by the tragic loss of lives resulting from the unfortunate incident at Birch,” he said, adding that 20 staff members and five tourists died in the fire.

Airports and police units across the country remain on alert as the search widens for the Luthra brothers, who co-own the Romeo Lane chain of restaurants and clubs operating in Delhi, Gurugram, and Goa.

Saurabh Luthra, described on the company’s website as a “gold medalist engineer turned fastest-growing restaurateur,” has been featured in Forbes India and serves as the group’s chairman.
