A woman was burnt alive after her husband allegedly set her on fire in front of their children in Hyderabad, in an incident that has sent shockwaves through the city.
According to NDTV, the horrific crime took place on December 24, a day before Christmas, in the Nallakunta area of the Telangana capital.
The report quoted the police as saying that the accused, identified as Venkatesh, had long been suspicious of his wife, Triveni, a factor that frequently led to heated arguments and alleged harassment within the household.
On the day of the incident, Venkatesh reportedly assaulted Triveni in the presence of their children before the violence escalated to a fatal level.
As per preliminary police findings cited by the report, Venkatesh allegedly poured petrol on Triveni and set her ablaze inside their home.
When their daughter attempted to intervene and rescue her mother, the accused is said to have pushed the child into the flames as well, before fleeing the scene.
The daughter narrowly escaped with minor burn injuries and was later rushed to a hospital for medical treatment.
Neighbours, alerted by the children’s screams, rushed to the house but found that Triveni had already succumbed to severe burn injuries by the time they arrived.
The accused managed to escape before residents or police could intervene.
The couple had reportedly entered into a love marriage and were parents to two children, a daughter and a son.
The report claimed that Venkatesh’s growing suspicion towards his wife had resulted in persistent abuse, prompting Triveni to seek refuge at her parents’ home some time ago.
She is believed to have returned to her husband only after he assured her that he would mend his ways, according to initial information gathered by the police.
Following the incident, police registered a case of murder and launched a search operation to track down Venkatesh, who remains absconding.
Authorities said efforts were underway to locate and arrest him at the earliest.
