New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon surprised onlookers at the Sikh Games in Auckland after he tried making traditional Indian jalebis, winning hearts across the Internet. Luxon attended the event in Takanini with local MP Rima Nakhle, where they joined the opening ceremony, met athletes and interacted with performers and volunteers.
The highlight of Luxon’s visit came when he stepped behind a large wok of hot oil to try to make jalebis. Videos showed him carefully pouring the batter while smiling through the jalebi-making process. Sharing the video on Instagram, Luxon wrote, “Getting amongst it at the Sikh Games in Takanini this afternoon with local MP @rimanakhlenz. Good luck to all those competing — and to those who end up eating my attempt at making jalebi!”

The clip has since gone viral, prompting an array of reactions. “Prime Minister what you cooking its looks dilecions yummy. The best cook awesome,” a user wrote. “Unity in Diversity – India & New Zealand,” another user commented.
“Our prime minister is so humble,” a third user reacted. A fourth user called him “Luxonpreet.”
MP Nakhle also shared photos from the event, featuring Luxon along with ministers Mark Mitchell and Simeon Brown interacting with participants.
“Another amazing, electric, phenomenal @nzsikhgames has just wrapped up at South Auckland’s sport complex @brucepulmanpark,” she wrote, adding that Prime Minister Luxon and ministers “had a fantastic time at the opening ceremony, and afterwards, while meeting many athletes, spectators and volunteers.”
She further highlighted the scale of the event. “The NZ Sikh Games is a large-scale competition with many traditional Sikh sports as well as Western sports. Athletes and spectators travel not only from all across New Zealand, but also from around the world. Congratulations to the organisers and volunteers on such a successful event!” Nakhle wrote.
