A district court in Maharashtra’s Akola on Wednesday sentenced 10 people to life imprisonment for the murder of Kisanrao Hundiwale, the state president of the Gawli Samaj, which took place in May 2019.
The District and Sessions Court convicted Shriram Gawande, Ranjit Gawande, Vikram Gawande, Suraj Gawande, Dheeraj Gawande, Vishal Tayade, Satish Tayade, Pratik Tonde, Mayur Ahir and Dinesh Rajput, special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said, reported news agency PTI.
However, the court acquitted five accused, Praveen Shriram Gawande, Mangesh Gawande, Dipali Gawande, Namrata Gawande and Sheikh Sabir, citing insufficient evidence.
Hundiwale, an influential leader of the Gawli community, was attacked inside the Charity Commissioner`s office in Akola city on May 6, 2019.
According to PTI, the relations between Hundiwale and some of the accused were strained due to a dispute over the control of an educational institute, and they had a heated exchange in the commissioner`s office before he was attacked, according to police.
The victim was hit on the head with a fire extinguisher cylinder, causing fatal injuries.
A case was registered against 15 persons at Civil Lines Police Station.
Maharashtra govt opposes Abu Salem`s parole, tells Bombay High Court he will flee if granted it
The Maharashtra government has opposed the parole of gangster Abu Salem and told the Bombay High Court that he would flee if granted it, reported the PTI.
The state stated that granting parole to Abu Salem could lead to him absconding, which may cause serious diplomatic issues between India and Portugal, the country from which he was extradited.
In an affidavit filed before the court on Tuesday, the state opposed Salem’s plea seeking 14 days of parole following the death of his elder brother. The government said that, at most, Salem could be granted two days of emergency parole.
When the petition came up for hearing before a bench of Justices A S Gadkari and Shyam Chandak, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said it was the prosecuting agency in the case and therefore should be impleaded as a respondent.
The CBI further argued that granting parole or bail to Salem could lead to serious law and order problems, the news agency reported.
The court said it would hear the matter on January 28.
