Maharashtra: Power transformer explodes in Pune; one dead, 7 injured



One person was killed and 7 others were injured after an electric transformer exploded near a village in Pune district of Maharashtra on Thursday, the police said, reported the PTI.

The injured were shifted to a hospital and were being treated for the burn injuries they had sustained, the police said.

According to the PTI, fire brigade and police personnel rushed to the blast spot near Solu village, while the injured were taken to government-run Sassoon General Hospital in Pune city, they said.

A police officer from Pimpri-Chinchwad township said as per preliminary information shared by local residents, a blast took place in an electric transformer near a defunct metal unit on the village`s outskirts, as per the PTI.

“We are verifying what exactly happened, but in the incident, eight people sustained burn injuries and one of them later succumbed,” he said.

In an another incident, a massive fire broke out in mutiple cars near Teacher`s Colony in Bandra East area of Mumbai, the officials said.

According to the civic officials, the incident was reported at around 6:30 pm, behind Teacher`s Colony, near Shamshan Bhumi on Bandra Service Road.

“The incident was swiftly reported by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation`s Mumbai  Fire Brigade,” an official said.

The fire was categorised as a Level 1 blaze. It was confined to an area housing approximately 100-150 scrap vehicles, covering an estimated area of 1000 square feet, the civic body said.

Mumbai Fire Brigade initiated firefighting operations, deploying one hose line to combat the flames. The situation was deemed to be under control.

Authorities mobilised in response to the incident included BMC`s Mumbai Fire Brigade and the local police department. Their coordinated efforts played a crucial role in containing the fire and preventing its escalation to neighboring areas, the officials said.

The BMC said that no injuries were reported in the incident.

Meanwhile, a fire broke out in an under-construction commercial building in Navi Mumbai and the fire brigade battled the blaze in an overnight operation that ended on Tuesday morning, an official said.

No casualties were reported in the fire that erupted on the 28th floor of the building in the Shiravane MIDC area around 6.30 pm on Monday, the official said.

Wooden slabs on the top-most floor caught fire. Five fire engines were dispatched to the scene to contain the blaze, he said.

Firefighting operations continued overnight and ended around 9 am on Tuesday, the official said, adding that a probe will be conducted to ascertain the cause of the fire.
