Mumbai Police have booked three executives of Tata Play and Hathway’s internet service distributor company owner and manager on Thursday on charges of abetment to suicide after a 22-year-old employee of Airtel named them in a instagram reel he made right before allegedly dying by suicide in Malad (East) on Wednesday.
The brother of the deceased has claimed that the accused manager of Tata Play and the local authorised internet distributor were troubling his brother, an employee of their competitor, Airtel. He said, frustrated by this, his brother took the extreme step.
The deceased has been identified as Chandreshkumar Tiwari, an employee of Airtel, Kandivali. Tiwari allegedly hung himself at his house in Pratap Nagar on Wednesday. Before allegedly taking his life, Tiwari made a video statement on Instagram.
In the 59-second video, Tiwari said in Hindi, “So guys, so you all know me, Chandresh. And the steps I’m going to take. Whatever steps I take henceforth, the responsibility lies on Deepak Vishwakarma from Tata. I have been threatened by them, saying if I want to continue my job, I will have to be considerate of him (Deepak), and if I don’t, he won’t let me get work in all of Mumbai. I recently joined Airtel and was threatened by the Hathway office in Kandivali. Sadanand Kadam and Paresh Shetty. And the thing is, Deepak Vishwakarma has also said that I will not be able to get any job.”
Tiwari also wrote in the video caption, “Thank you all to my friends and sorry to my family. I am making a huge mistake, but the past 5 years have gone totally horribly for me; I can’t tolerate anymore.”
The video was also seen by a cousin of Tiwari, who informed Tiwari’s elder brother Pawan about the video. Pawan was already heading to Mumbai from his village in Jaunpur after discovering about his brother’s alleged suicide.
Pawan and his mother had gone to their village on October 22, while Tiwari was living alone in the house with their relatives residing in neighbouring houses.
Pawan told the police that on Wednesday, when Tiwari was not responding to his calls, he sent a relative to his house to check on him. As Tiwari was not opening the door, the relatives broke the door and discovered that Tiwari had allegedly hung himself. He was rushed to the Shatabdi hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Pawan, who works as a senior sales executive with Hathway distributor Sai Star, reached Mumbai and showed the suicide video statement of his brother to the police.
Pawan has stated before police that his brother (the deceased) earlier worked for Tata Play, Kandivali, as senior sales executive, but left the job after eight months and joined Airtel as he was being harassed by his manager, Deepak Vishwakarma.
“Deepak Vishwakarma, Hathway’s authorised dealer and Sai Star’s owner Sadanand Kadam, and manager Paresh Shetty would often threaten my brother, saying they would ensure that my brother doesn’t get work anywhere,” Pawan alleged.
On his complaint, the Kurar police registered a case under sections 108(abetment of suicide), 3(5)(common intention), and 351(2)(intimidation) of Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) against Deepak Vishwakarma from Tata and Sadanand Kadam and Paresh Shetty from Hathway distributor Sai Star in Kandivali. The police are further investigating the case, an officer said.
Pawan has also alleged that when he and his brother complained to Airtel regarding the harassment and trouble given to his brother by fellow competitors in the region, Airtel did not take any action.
