A Pakistani cricketer is facing allegations of harassment for misbehaving with hotel staff during their stay at Kandy during the T20 World Cup.
Controversies surrounding alleged harassment have plagued Pakistan Cricket, further denting their reputation following their exit from the Super 8 stages.
The incident happened before Pakistan’s Super 8s game against Sri Lanka in Pallekele, with the reports of the concerned female staff members crying and shouting for help following the misconduct.
It is reported that the incident unfolded at the Golden Crown Hotel, where the Pakistani team was putting up for their scheduled matches in Kandy during the T20 WC.
The report further claims that the female staff member shouted for help, after which the hotel staff came to her rescue, while reporting about this to the team manager, Naveed Cheema, who quickly apologised to the management on behalf of the cricket.
It is said that Cheema imposed a fine on the unnamed player for his misconduct to settle the matter internally at that time.
The hotel management reportedly wanted stern action against the Pakistani cricketer involved.
“Before Pakistan’s last Super Eight match against Sri Lanka, a Pakistan World Cup squad player misbehaved with a female housekeeping staff,” said a source.
The controversy comes on the back of Pakistan’s another defeat in the ICC tournament, where they failed to make it to the last four despite playing in favourable conditions.
They suffered a heavy loss against India in the group stage, and despite a 5-run win, they failed to restrict Sri Lanka behind par total to qualify for the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, this incident also revived discussion around past controversies involving Pakistani players in alleged misconduct, with batter Haider Ali’s Manchester instance coming into the spotlight.
During Pakistan Shaheens’ tour of England last year, Haider Ali was accused of raping a woman; however, due to a lack of evidence, he was released.
