A 75-year-old man, a resident of Walipur Khurd village in Ludhiana, was allegedly beaten to death by his son and daughter-in-law, who also cremated the body. A case in this connection was, however, lodged by the victim’s nephew, who upon returning from Canada found purported videos of the alleged crime, showing the accused couple “harassing and beating” the victim.
Mullanpur Dakha police station SHO Inspector Amritpal Singh said, “Deceased Jagroop Singh’s son Guriqbal Singh, alias Makhan Singh, who is in his forties, was arrested, while Guriqbal’s wife Surinder Kaur, alias Shinder, fled to Canada after the alleged crime.”
The nephew, Kiranveer Singh, in his complaint to the police, stated, “Jagroop Singh, who used to call me regularly, informed me that his son and daughter-in-law used to beat him brutally and deny him food. My uncle feared for his life. I had assured my uncle that I would soon return to India and counsel Guriqbal and his wife.”
“Three days before his death, my uncle had told me that his son and daughter-in-law had beaten him again and that they would kill him,” Kiranveer said.
“On December 3, however, my uncle’s daughter Inderjit Kaur informed me about his death. I told Inderjit not to cremate the body until I returned from Canada. When I reached home on December 6, uncle was cremated by his son and daughter-in-law,” said Kiranveer, adding: “I was very close to my uncle who raised me after my father’s death and sent me to Canada for studies.”
Kiranveer further stated, “When I asked Guriqbal as to why he cremated the body in haste and did not wait for me, Guriqbal said the body would have decomposed. My suspicions deepened when some village elders, who had bathed uncle’s body before the cremation, told me about injury marks on the back of my uncle’s head and traces of blood.”
Kiranveer said, “A village elderly gave me a pen drive containing video of Surinder assaulting my uncle, pushing him brutally and causing him a fatal head injury, while Guriqbal encouraged his wife to continue the assault, saying ‘hor maar’ (beat him more),” Kiranveer stated.
The complainant stated that the accused also threatened other family members to remain silent. Following the crime, Surinder fled abroad, Kiranveer alleged.
The SHO said investigations revealed the accused had a history of torturing Jagroop Singh. “In July, villagers had intervened and the accused promised they would vacate the house and live separately by December, but it never happened,” the officer said.
The SHO added, “An FIR under sections 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 238 (destroying or concealing evidence of a crime) and 3 (5) (criminal act carried out by multiple persons in furtherance of a common intention) of the BNS has been registered against the accused couple at Mullanpur Dakha police station and further probe is on.”
