Moradabad faces a severe rat infestation, damaging infrastructure and homes. A successful pilot project in Ward No 41 captured 683 rats. A citywide campaign is planned.
Rs 30 lakh tender to be initiated for citywide rat eradication drive.
Residents in Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad, who have long battled the nuisance of stray dogs and monkeys, now face a new and unexpected menace has emerged in the city – rats. The rodent infestation has reached alarming levels, with burrowing rats threatening the very foundations of homes and infrastructure. In response, the Municipal Corporation has announced a large-scale initiative to curb the growing crisis.
Residents of Moradabad have been increasingly raising concerns over the destructive impact of the rats, which have damaged sewer lines, eroded streets, and even gnawed through wooden doors in older parts of the city. Complaints pouring in from neighbourhoods like Mandi Chowk, Nawabpura, Asalatpura, Sarafa Bazaar, and Idgah prompted officials to take urgent action.
Following discussions in a recent board meeting, the Municipal Corporation assigned the task of rat control to the Central Storage Corporation. A pilot project was launched in Ward No. 41, Asalatpura Bhude, where specialised chemical methods were deployed to trap the rats. Officials reported that the operation was highly effective, leading to the capture of 683 rats, which were subsequently disposed of at the designated animal carcass disposal centre.
Encouraged by the initial success, the Municipal Corporation is now set to expand the campaign citywide. A tender process will soon be initiated, with an estimated budget of Rs 30 lakh allocated to the operation. Once finalised, the eradication drive will extend across all affected areas, including Jama Masjid, Atai Mohalla, Sidhi Sarai, and Jhabbu Ka Nala.
Municipal authorities emphasise that this is not the first time the city has grappled with a rat problem. Previous efforts have seen temporary relief, but the persistence of the issue has necessitated a more comprehensive and sustained approach. Additional Municipal Commissioner Ajit Kumar confirmed that the city is committed to addressing the infestation at its root, ensuring long-term relief for residents.
