SS Rajamouli says talks are on with Japanese studios to adapt Jr NTR and Ram Charan’s RRR into an anime, following the film’s massive global success.

SS Rajamouli has revealed that discussions are underway with Japanese studios to adapt his global blockbuster RRR into an anime, potentially expanding the film’s universe years after its release.
With RRR in 2022, director S. S. Rajamouli didn’t just deliver a blockbuster—he created a global cultural moment. Mounted as a Telugu period action spectacle, the film transcended language barriers and found passionate audiences across continents. Years after its release, the frenzy around NTR Jr. and Ram Charan’s revolutionary saga shows no signs of fading. Now, the celebrated filmmaker is exploring an entirely new format to extend the legacy of the film—an anime adaptation.
S. S. Rajamouli exploring an anime adaptation of RRR
RRR’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. What began as a Telugu-language epic went on to rewrite box-office records, dominate global conversations, and carve out space at prestigious international platforms, including the Oscars. Its reach was so expansive that even markets traditionally distant from Indian cinema embraced it wholeheartedly.
In a recent interaction with Polygon, Rajamouli revealed that discussions are underway to reimagine RRR as an anime series. The director shared that he is currently in talks with multiple Japanese studios for the project and is hopeful about taking it forward. “I’m waiting for things to fall into place,” he said, adding that if all goes well, the anime could offer a “cool continuation” of the RRR universe.
RRR’s massive global footprint, especially in Japan
The idea of an anime adaptation isn’t entirely surprising, considering RRR’s phenomenal reception in Japan. When the film released there, tickets reportedly sold out within seconds, reflecting an unprecedented demand. Even more remarkably, the film continued to screen in Japanese theatres more than a year after its release, a rarity for an Indian production.
From its emotionally charged narrative and thunderous background score to its iconic dance numbers and pitch-perfect casting, RRR struck a balance between mass appeal and cinematic ambition. At the time of its release, it was also among the most expensive Indian films ever made.
Awards, acclaim and a legacy that continues to grow
While Indian audiences celebrated RRR as a larger-than-life entertainer, its impact on the international stage was equally powerful. The film received standing ovations at global screenings and went on to make history at the 95th Academy Awards, where Naatu Naatu won the Oscar for Best Original Song.
Backed by D. V. V. Danayya, the film also swept major honours at home, including multiple wins at the 69th National Film Awards. With talks of an anime adaptation now gaining momentum, RRR’s story appears far from over—only evolving into new forms that continue to expand its global footprint.
